Remember the colossal turd that was Aliens: Colonial Marines? Jac does, he spent £50 on it on launch day, the sucker. They say time heals all wounds. Well not that one. I say all this because a modder is attempting to give this particular turd the polishing of its life, all in an effort to turn it into quality product. Surely it can’t be possible was my hot take, but I’m eager to see how and if this alchemist can take faeces and turn it into gaming gold.

The brave modder in question is one TemplarGFX. He’s tweaked pretty much everything there is to tackle in Aliens: Colonial Marines, including the graphics, reworking the AI, and totally overhauling the game’s balancing.

“Experience Aliens: Colonial Marines how it should have been when it came out,” said TemplarGFX. “Heavily Balanced and Play-Tested for exciting, suspenseful and most importantly, FUN game play.”

The mod in question is available right now over on ModDB, and it’s really quite impressive the lengths he’s gone to in order to try and salvage something resembling a playable game. For most people the visual improvements are going to be a highlight, bumping up the max shadow resolution, adding new particle effects, improving lighting models, and cranking all the sliders to max in an effort to get Colonial Marines looking somewhat decent.

On the gameplay front the xenomorphs now move faster, are more agile, and scurry along walls quicker. This increased lethality is offset by a smaller health bar, but you’ll still need a good headshot to bring one down.

Next time Aliens: Colonial Marines goes on sale I might be tempted to give it a go just out of interest to see how this mod impacts things. From what I played on Xbox 360 there seemed precious little worth salvaging, but the changes on offer here are fairly comprehensive.

Anybody tempted to give Aliens: Colonial Marines another shot with this mod? Or is this one alien that’s better left dead? As always, let us know your thoughts below!
