Ahah, Fable Legends may not be as dead as we’d been led to believe! Despite being cancelled following the closure of legendary British studio Lionhead Studios, the Xbox One and PC title could be resurrected by a number of ex-Lionhead devs. Victory for the chicken chasers.
The 4v1 asymmetric multiplayer game pitted four adventurers against a dungeon master who would try to stop them in their tracks. Fable Legends was apparently just a matter of months away from an open beta, having ran closed betas since last year. Microsoft somewhat unceremoniously pulled the rug from under them and shut the studio down though, leaving Fable Legends in development limbo.
According to sources close to MCV, a number of the ex-developers are in discussions with Microsoft in the hopes of obtaining the IP once more. Fable Legends would then continue development as an indie product, although Microsoft would still hold the rights to Fable so it couldn’t appear on rival platforms such as the PlayStation 4.
“We aren’t sharing additional details beyond that we have ceased development on Fable Legends, and are in discussions with employees at Lionhead about our proposed closure of the studio as well”, said a Microsoft spokesperson.
Obviously such a studio would need a hefty cash injection to continue working on a game like Fable Legends, so it’s unclear how this could play out. For those still holding out hope though, there is a small chance Fable Legends may yet see the light of day.
We'll keep you posted of course if anything changes.
