Five Of The Most Bizarre Simulator Games

Written by Jon Sutton on Sun, Apr 10, 2016 4:00 PM

Gaming in general is preoccupied with the fantastical. It's the ultimate form of escapism; becoming an alien slaying hero or the world's fastest hovercraft racer. For most of us even pretending to fly a Concorde or truck across America is a crazy idea which we're keen to do. Some games though, they do things differently. I'm talking about the hardcore simulator games.

There's hundreds of them out there, covering every from the truly banal to the truly bizarre. Gaming recreations of usually everyday activities which prioritise realism and attention to detail over everything else. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of great sim games out there, but here are five of the strangest...

Warehouse and Logistics Simulator

I mean, where to begin. I wasted hours upon hours of my life away hauling ass as Ryo Hazuki in Shenmue II, but it’s still all kinds of bizarre to see something so consummately niche as Warehouse and Logistics Simulator. Let's break that down into its constituent parts. Warehouse Simulator. Logistics Simulator. The number of people actually wanting to play a game where you’re a forklift truck driver must be astoundingly small. Fair play if if that’s you though, because this could be the answer to your warehouse prayers.

Shower With Your Dad Simulator

Most simulators take their subject matter pretty seriously. There’s an offshoot which very much doesn’t though, spearheaded by the likes of Goat Simulator. The clumsily monikered Shower With Your Dad Simulator 2015: Do You Still Shower With Your Dad is a bit of a mouthful (Sorry), but it’s become something of a smash hit with the YouTube crowd. It looks a bit crap and it’s clearly designed to get cheap hits, but it’s kind of masterful in its naffness, don’t you think?

Ropeway Simulator 2014

Sometimes it’s the specificity of a simulator which makes it stand out from the crowd. At times we’ve probably all wondered what it would be like to drive a truck, fly a plane, or drive a train, but have any of us ever really taken the time ponder what it would be like to work on cable cars. Thought not. But that’s exactly what Ropeway Simulator 2014 offers, allowing players to build their own ropeways stretching across some breathtaking mountainside, using, and I think this is the best bit, officially licensed gondolas and lifts from Doppelmayr. I can’t be the only one to be slightly intrigued.

Forestry 2017 - The Simulation

I was going to plump for Woodcutter 2013 as the deforestation lovers game of choice, but if you take a look at its rings you can see it’s beginning to show its age. No, now we’re bang up to date with Forestry 2017 - The Simulation, which has you felling trees, picking up timber, and selling your wood to buy a swanky new chainsaw. It’s all the fresh air and freedom of working outdoors, without the fresh air, freedom, and outdoors bits. Mind your thumbs.

Fireworks Simulator

I guess kudos for even thinking of this because, let’s face it, fireworks are awesome. Unless you’re a small child or a dog. If you’re a dog then woof, woof, if you’re a child, how did you learn to read at such a young age? Anyway, fireworks are great. They’re all lights, colours and sounds that affect the warm, fuzzy parts of our brains. Ever wondered how a magnificent fireworks display was put together though? Wonder no more my pyrotechnics loving friends, because Fireworks Simulator has you totally covered. Anything that reminds you of FantaVision can be no bad shakes.

These are just a taste of course, there's a world of weird and wonderful simulators out there, what are some of your favourites? I'm a self confessed truck sim addict, there's nothing that can quite beat the feeling of the open road.

And with VR, I'm sure someone, somewhere, at some point will make a "Video-game Simulator" as well in which you will play a videogame... inside a videogame

That kind of already exists. There's an app that lets you simulate a 360 degree virtual desktop with the Vive or Rift. You can even watch movies in a virtual theater or play games in a virtual office. It's more like a "productivity" app than a game, though.

I know. And there are many instances of a game in a game like in GTA:SA, you can go to arcades or in your home and play "videogames".

But with VR, You can take that to a whole new level and go full "Inception" XD
And that's when I'll really consider getting a "Simulator". Except for Goat simulator which i want now

Never been much interested in sims myself, it's just not my thing... but will definitely get goat simulator on my next rig. I saw a clip on youtube once, and the immediate thought that came to my mind was: "DAMN!! This must be Saints Row from a Goat's perspective"... XD

Whoever made that was probably either high on weed while making it, or he really needs help!! - I mean, blood and gore in games aside, having a schoolgirl do that stuff is just plain disturbing!

Just my honest opinion...

It's in development, so not everything is implemented yet. The developer eventually will add ways to win the game without physically harming anyone. I just picked a video of a particularly interesting bug.

Ok Well yes, the title was self-explanatory. It was a bug... but still, a simulator where you play as a deranged psycho school-girl who'd brutally kill anyone who tries to get between her and her crush, is quite creepy in itself don't you think? Other than that, the final game might be fun for people who are into sims.
