Impressive Skyrim Mod Totally Overhauls The Towns And Cities To Make Them More Lifelike

There was nothing worse than hearing of some grand, far off city in Skyrim, only to trek miles across the frozen wilderness and find a small gathering of three of four mud huts. City my arse. Even Oblivion's Imperial City is bigger than anything on offer in Skyrim. Well enter stage left a mightily impressive new Skyrim mod called Holds: The City Overhaul, which radically revamps a number of the townships.

From the looks of it pretty much every city and town has been given a bit of a tidy up, but it's the cities of Falkreath, Dawnstar and Winterhold that have improved the most. Each looks denser, more detailed, and, well, a whole more lifelike. They’re fantasy cities as you’d imagine them to be, rather than an inbred sheep-herding family gathered round a campfire.

"The aim of all of this is to create a more memorable and diverse experience," wrote Galandil, the mod's creator, over on Nexus Mods."Making the cities actually feel like cities hopefully without ruining the natural and realistic design of the vanilla game.

"This is not a botanical garden mod, nor is it a beautification mod. Holds aims to stay as lore-friendly as possible and at the same time expand on the backgrounds and stories for its locations."

Being in the middle of replaying Skyrim, I'm tempted to give this mod a whirl. It was a real bugbear of mine to see these basic, small towns passed off as grand cities, and on the basis of the video this mod does a great job of addressing this.

I tried it this afternoon, and while it looks nice there are tons of bugs. Compatibility patches for mods like Helgen Reborn did not work, I had to use TCL to use the log spliter in falkreath because half of it was inside the city's exterior LOD. Even with performance patches installed my framerate went to 10fps at solitude docks. I like it but it needs a ton of work.

This, on top of Helgen rebuilt and those two huge new lands mods will keep me busy till the F4CK (Fallout 4 Creation Kit, I accept no other acronym) gets released.

Eventually I'll get a new PC and instantly upgrade my RAM to 16GB. Been dreaming of runnign loads of mods on Skyrim for a couple ofo years now. Would buy more RAM now but they don't sell or make low density DDR3 anymore...:(

8GB RAM is plenty. What you need is vRAM, CPU power and GPU power.

A huge amount of RAM on skyrim is actually pretty pointless. The game is very annoyingly hard coded to crash if it uses more than 3.5GB of it

ENBoost helps with that which is why the more RAM and VRAM you have the better, though if you have windows 10 that is a different story.

Not exactly. The game is written in an x86 architecture, thus it places a cap at 3.2gb ram. Having more ram won't improve anything as the game can't use it. Windows 10 won't solve this. However, enboost does improve ram allocation; placing a more stress on your vram while relieving it from your ram.

But still you need all the DLCs to make this mod work which is pain in the ass...

But Skyrim with DLC is dirt cheap now

I've found dirt more expensive actually. Especially the one in the jar held by cpt. Jack Sparrow

Brodual does an in depth explanation about the mod and what incompatiblities you should be cautions about. I'd give mod this some more time to mature before installing otherwise try it out on a temperay save and mod profile in MO. Checkout SKY CITY, TRUE CITY and SNOW CITY if you want something extra. https://youtu.be/9DA5TrlFefQ
