SEGA To Officially Support Modded Mega Drive Games On Steam With New Classics Hub

Sega has announced it has plans to allow the legal sharing of modified Mega Drive (Genesis) games through the Steam Workshop. Users will be able to tinker with game files and load in modded ROMs to the workshop, sharing them with other players. It’s all part of the new Sega Mega Drive Classics Hub, which acts as majorly souped version of the emulator its Steam games currently run through.

Based on a bedroom of a 90’s Sega fan, it’s an interactive hub with your Sega Mega Drive games sitting on a shelf and console sat underneath the television. It’s all fully rendered and you just select a game to slot it into the console and begin playing.

Kind of awesome, don’t you think? There’s a fairly impressive level of support going into all of this as well, including local co-op, graphical enhancement filters, save states and full gamepad support.

You can see the full list of games which can be supported below. There’s a few glaring omissions, most notably Sonic, but Sega has said it has plans to support "every single Mega Drive game".

Actually this has potential to be a pretty awesome idea. Though the real cool thing here is the fact that they actually sell their old games on steam.

I'd love to see some Phantasy Star mods. Improved musical scores? Enhanced graphics? Mission add ons? I don't expect any of these, but it'll be fun to see what the community will have to offer for some of these other classics.

I hope they allow Sonic ROM hacks. I've been a huge fan of the Sonic hacking scene for years; those guys make some top-notch stuff, often every bit as good as the originals.
