DOOM SnapMap Level Creator Supports Just Four-Player Deathmatch

We’re just a matter of weeks away from DOOM’s launch, but it’s only now we find out from id Software via live Twitch stream that its SnapMap level creation tool only allows players to build four-player maps. That’s down from the 12-players on the nine maps DOOM ships with.

The tool itself looks very neat and has some powerful features, allowing users regardless of platform to piece together DOOM maps for co-op and PvP play. There’s a number of pre-built rooms and scenery objects to place, and these can then be shared with other players. Rated and ranked, the best maps will in theory float to the top. All well and good, but as it happens the scale of these maps is going to be far smaller than anything id themselves have the freedom put together.

This is a frustration for a couple of reasons. Firstly, and most importantly, as previously announced DOOM will not have mod support. At the time Bethesda’s Pete Hines said ”Everything that we’re doing on the mod side will be through SnapMap.” Mods are an absolute DOOM staple throughout its 23-year history, and this feature has been stripped in favour of SnapMap, which it now turns out is very limited in scope.

Secondly there’s the DOOM season pass to consider. Announced last month, the DOOM season pass is now the only way for DOOM players to get access to new 12-player maps. When the season pass was announced we said it may be a bit redundant if the quality of the SnapMaps are good enough. Well not any more.

For me this is a really disappointing turn of events. What started out as a feature with serious potential now looks as if it's a noose around DOOM's neck.

What do you make of these revelations from id Software? Should mod tool support be reintegrated?

Snapmap was not disappointing. I have a feeling that we might be able to create maps with old textures. there was an E1M2 map that Bethesda refused to show. maybe it's a surprise. There might be more stuff but they didn't want to spoil

I don't get it why people say Doom Open Beta didn't feel like Doom. Of course it doesn't. Doom never had any MP (beside mods). And it was beta, with LIMITED guns and maps. the only game didn't feel like doom was Doom3. but I also love it.

I mostly got this game because of Snapmap. I love to do pve. I'm not a pvp guy much. Creating maps, fighting bosses with co-op will be really great for me.

I bet the players are going to cause an uproar, the season-pass multiplayer will be empty and Bethesda/id will decide to give non season pass holders the full multiplayer experience.
That's what I think SHOULD happen, at least.

P.S.: Still having no regrets pre-ordering the game. SP is what I care about the most anyway and the MP I liked regardless of snapmap.

Still playing Quake Live, no intention of shifting to this after so much disappointing news, alongside the ever-moronic season pass.

I'm not sure what the complaints here are because the decade-old DooM3 didn't really have a multiplayer anywhere near as fast-paced (which is a big plus in my books, as a former Quake III/Live player) OR feature-filled as this. And DOOM 1 & 2 didn't have MP at all.
In addition to all that - you can't really claim "It didn't feel like DOOM at all" either when all you've played is a BETA version of two MULTIPLAYER maps with a LIMITED DEMO SELECTION of items and weaponry...

To be honest this game is more DOOM than DOOM3 singleplayerwise. On the other hand multiplayer is half Quake half Halo.

If anything I'd only get it for the SP, but I don't want this I want The Elder Scrolls 6.

To be honest they can turn this game into next-gen Quake 3 Arena with just a few small tweaks. It is that easy.

Can but won't. I was so hyped for this but the last few announcements have been really disappointing.

Not sure. I wasn't really bothered about SnapMap and I'm sure the gamers will gause an uproar and Bethesday will just uncap the player limit for everyone.
Aside from that I really enjoyed both Multiplayer Betas. Used to play Quake III/Live a lot, and the game felt so familiar and smooth that I was scoring high (which boosts the satisfaction :D).
Looking forward to SP the most!
