Micron Kicks Off GDDR5X Memory Mass Production In Advance Of GeForce GTX 1080 Launch

Micron has kicked off mass production of GDDR5X memory, and just in the nick of time from the sounds of things. The faster and more efficient new memory standard is set to be used in Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card which is due to launch in just over two weeks’ time, the first pictures of which leaked earlier.

The GTX 1070 will make use of standard GDDR5, so as it stands it’s just the GTX 1080 which will be affected by the step up in production, although AMD is rumoured to use GDDR5X for its upcoming Polaris GPUs which are expected to be launching at the tail-end of this month.

“Today, I am happy to announce that GDDR5X, the fastest discrete memory component in the world, has already entered mass production,” wrote Micron’s Kris Kidon. “With gaming and virtual reality driving continuous increases in performance requirements for GPUs, it’s a critical time to deliver higher memory bandwidth and efficiency, and GDDR5X is well positioned to help drive these new efficiencies.”

The GeForce GTX 1080 will utilise 8GB of quad data rate GDDR5X memory running at 10Gb/s on a 256-bit memory bus, providing total memory bandwidth of 320GB/s. By default GDDR5 runs at 7Gb/s, while GDDR5X offers anywhere from 10Gb/s all the way up to 14Gb/s. It’s much faster than HBM1 but has a much thinner memory bus (1024-bit on HBM1).

Although HBM2 is expected to pummel GDDR5X when it comes to overall performance, it will come at a significant cost. GDDR5X is a natural evolution of GDDR5 and so utilises much of the same production methods, driving down the cost to manufacture, design and accomodate on a graphics card. Naturally that price premium means we can only expect to see HBM2 on enthusiast-tier cards at this early stage, but expect this to change in the next couple of years.

For now then GDDR5X represents a quick, cheap boost in memory bandwidth, closing off a potential bottleneck in allowing the GeForce GTX 1080 reach its full potential.

Translationn behind all the gibberish:
We are going to keep dragging GDDR5, GDDR5X, GDDR5X2.....till we can mint every cent on these bad boys and then finally prodcue HBM 2 OR HBM 3 and make us all feel like dweebs. And then, lo, The Milking of Consumers Begin.

Then why didn't they push it already? Now I expect 11XX series with 12-14Gb/s and then move on to hbm or maybe even GDDR6

Is that what you want? You know, to buy laptop as powerful as 2000$ gaming PC, it will cost you much much more, and still, PC with the "same" hardware will be more powerful. But, it's you decision m8 if you have money :)

i have HD 7970, 5 years old card and its have 384-bit bus. with 1580MHz of memory have my GDDR5 300GB/s bandwith. in crossfire i have 600GB/s, where is much expansive GDDR5X memory?no comment...

Altough the overall memory bandwith doesn't exceed -320Gbps. I think at high resolutions, which the newer cards will be targeted at, this is still a bottleneck. Nvidia as well as AMD have to manufacture broader memory bus interfaces instead of just cranking up the clock speeds.
