The Worst Ever Games From The Biggest Franchises In Gaming

There's some absolutely massive gaming franchises out there that achieved so, so much, but none are perfect. Try as they might, there's always one or two games in a series that let the side down. it doesn't help of course when they follow a genuinely exceptional predecessor, setting the bar too high for them to possibly reach. Here we take a look at some of these; the worst games in the biggest franchises in gaming.

Apologies if you perhaps don't agree with some of these, so feel free to share your choices in the comments section below!

Assassin’s Creed

Ubisoft’s copybook isn’t exactly blot free these days, but if there's one game which summed up the depths to which it is possible to go, it is the abysmal first Assassin’s Creed outing. It was all too easy to get wowed by the early footage and the promise of a living, breathing world. What we got was one of most plodding games around. Ah, but it showed great promise, you might add, but promise means nothing without the goods to back it up. Fortunately, the only way was up for what would later become a blockbuster series.

Call of Duty: World at War

We were all still high as kites on the revelation that was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and the excitement of revisiting the setting of previous CoDs in the new engine was almost too much to bear. Or not. Despite what many fans would have you believe, World At War was a shoddy mess. Horrible balance, terrible spawn placements and lazy map design made for a really unsatisfying experience.

The Elder Scrolls Arena

The Elder Scrolls franchise took its sweet time getting great. In fact, the very first outing back in 1994 was absolutely terribad. You can find The Elder Scrolls Arena to play totally free of charge over on the official Elder Scrolls site if you A: Despise yourself, or B: having an honest to goodness interest in the birthing of a modern giant. I should warn you though, if you thought Skyrim’s identikit towns were bland, think again.

Battlefield Hardline

I can imagine the elevator pitch going down for this fairly well. Cops and robbers brawling in the streets over stacks of cash. Only bank heists aren’t battlefields, more like handbags at dawn. It was Payday 2 but without any semblance of the fun, all the while lacking the scope of what we’ve come to expect from a Battlefield game. Ask a group of people to tell you their favourite Battlefield game and you’ll receive a wide variety of answers, but I can promise you this - no one is going to pick Hardline.

Grand Theft Auto 4

GTA 4 took the ever audacious Grand Theft Auto series and dumped into straight into the grey, drab reality of a modern New York. Not only is Niko Bellic the single most uninteresting protagonist, but I still hear that Falstaffian fuck of a cousin asking me if I want to go bowling. I really don’t. Especially not with you. Add to that some of the worst driving in GTA history and you have yourself a truly dismal attempt at a franchise game, sitting directly between two of the greatest entries.

Far Cry 2

What could be more enjoyable than playing a game where no matter how many times you clear an outpost, they respawn? Answer: literally everything. Every story mission shoehorned in a reason that all soldiers would attack you to justify the lack of any form of AI. Even if you stole an enemy vehicle, the second soldiers see the car they shoot you. With a little boring item hunting and shitty fire physics, I actually felt my soul leave my body after sinking 20 hours into this game. But the most offensive thing in this failure of a game? Malaria and fetch quests for more tablets. No thank you.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Lockdown

While researching for this piece it actually brought to my attention just how high quality the Tom Clancy franchise is. There aren’t really any total duds to speak off, but its lowest point was probably Rainbow Six: Lockdown. It’s not a terrible game by any means, but Lockdown kind of forgot what a R6 game was even meant to be. Levels were linear, you couldn’t switch characters, and the whole game smacked of being simplified.

Don’t worry, it’s not all bad. Tomorrow we’ll be taking a look at the best each of these franchises have to offer. In the meantime, what do you think was the lowest point for each of these gaming giants? Let us know!

I agree with you. I feel and believe it was better than its predecessor too. I haven't played GTA V yet.
Seems the author of this article is used to Sleeping Dogs , Saints Row type driving physics. LoL.

yes i agree, gta iv had the most realistic driving ever in a game.

Gta v you speed at speed of sound and stop in like in 1 second in a very short distance, i mean the driving is good but gta iv was more realistic in my opinion.

World at War? Really? Have we forgotten Advanced Warfare already? Ghosts? 3? Nah, let's pick World at War. The game that introduced Zombie mode, a great 2 sided co-op campaign and fun multiplayer.

Ghost is teribble. as the name goes by, we're getting haunted pretty bad

the same goes to Advanced Warfare. Sadly, it was no more than an advanced graphic games, with deep sh*t gameplay experience

Better? Better? The only thing better about Ghosts is that the multiplayer is still being played.

The first game of the franchise should be an exclusion to a "worst of" list. Let alone AC1... Any of the Ship-ssassins Creed games should be here instead IMO.

And as many faults as Far Cry 2 has... god damn, list me other games that have the unique visual setting Far Cry 2 has. I would personally list 3 or 4 here, as they are not as unique as 2 was.

Hardline... something went wrong... I remember the beta being very bad on my PC, i had hopes for the game unlike 3 or 4 even with the bad beta.

I don't know really get why the first game shouldn't be a part of the conversation? So I couldn't say BioShock was the best BioShock game?

Don't look for hidden text, now - I did specifically state "Worst of". I am not exactly bothered about "Best of" lists as those are more subjective and heated and harder than "worst of" ones.

@Jon Assassin's creed 1 was great in story and character , Perhaps you choosed it because it hasn't a lot of features like the new assassin's creed.

I agree with Thewizerd. Assassin's Creed 1 was a definition of innovation. The year it was released , this game had better Gameplay, Concept and Historical setting. One of its kind ( for me atleast )

All of what you said is correct but BF:Hardline...i wouldn't say it was a bad game
Just that they should have made it a separate game instead of involving the battlefield name

I can agree with most of these. I can also see the reasoning behind it, however, I don't know if we can include Assassins Creed 1, since it technically was the start of the franchise.

The "worst" ever game from biggest franchises? ahhh come on, this games is not the worst ever actually, but some of them is the predecessor of the franchise we know today (idk with BF Hardline). There are more games that worst than this

and i also curious what is big franchise actually, is that because of their big marketing or how many franchises they already make? Because the list just couple of public opinion market win games

PC series that have a large number of titles and sold a lot of copies. They are by no means the worst games of all times, just, in my opinion, the worst games in these respective series.

Assassin Creed 1 is actually one of the strongest entries into the franchise and that's not an unpopular opinion. Assassin's Creed is one of the few titles with a thriving and believable atmosphere, which was carefully woven with lore through clever Easter eggs that help further the plot and leave room for your own deductions. Its a shame the rest of the series hadn't followed suit, but the effort required would not have allowed for yearly releases. It had wonky control yes, but at that time pretty much everything save for Gears of War, Uncharted, and other untouchable Third Person Perspective game had a slightly clumsy control. You didn't really delve into what was so "Abysmal" about the most interesting title in to the, in my opinion, weak franchise.

The worst game is EASILY Assassin's Creed Unity, everyone called it, because its the truth, Overblown marketing which basically sums up to: WOWZERS LOOK AT THE GRAPHICS AND ANIMATIONS, poor execution all around, extremely same-y, offers nothing new, a bug ridden mess, it marketed new parkour but, where exactly? It's only saving grace being the interesting co-op It handled itself pretty well (speaking from my experience on Xbox One)

I wasn't trying to be edgy, just a different opinion from yours ;) The remit of the article wasn't a deep dive on AC1 is bad, more to open up discussion. I most definitely think it's the worst, and none of the games listed above do I think are great.

Battlefield Hardline isn't bad at all, it is however, a DLC in a full retail price game, not unlike Halo: ODST, despite being overpriced one thing is clear, those who reject it never put in much time, those who actually see a decent game gave it a chance and found a great past time in the new gameplay modes, which were pretty creative!
The real criminal in Battlefields near perfect resume is BattleField 3 to follow Bad Company 2's perfection with mediocrity was not in EA's best interest despite it having a huge hype train and be critically acclaimed because of its GRAPHICS. People coming back to Battlefield 3 for a nostalgia trip found a shallow multiplayer experience, and wondering what the hell they ever saw in it to begin with.

I would go into a whole spiel of the worst Grand Theft Auto, but if there was any worst GTA it would be because it would be the worst BY DEFAULT, the Grand Theft Auto series, and Metal Gear Solid Series (save for the Phantom Pain) are masterpieces, untouchable, did GTA 4 take itself too seriously? Maybe. But what millions of people around the world found a huge interest into Niko Bellic and his world, one filled with so much bad luck and misfortune its a breath of fresh air to see him take on his challenges one at a time, working for each bad guy to the next amassing a fortune to live quietly with his friends and family.

The story is the embodiment of an immigrants American Dream, forced into crime to get himself and family by, philosophically tangible to the American Mafia, as far as doing what you gotta do, to make it for yourself and people most important to you, even if it means dipping your feet into murky waters.

I found Far Cry 3 to have a great message of taking life into your own hands, but why couldn't we play as Jason's brother, Grant? Yeah he would have less of a character progression arc than Jason, but he is much more likable than his two younger siblings. Outside of that Far cry 3 is very "familiar" to put it nicely, interesting concepts but a chore to finish. Its expansion Blood Dragon was a work of art however.
As far as Far Cry 2 goes, despite being basically drive here, kill this guy, drive back mission complete. I found great deal of fun exploring Africa in search of diamonds and Jackal tapes, playing both sides as a hired badass, Far Cry 2 is a walking simulator, but a very interesting one at that.

I agree with you about Lockdown being the worst, but is Rainbow six REALLY one of the BIGGEST franchises? I'm pretty sure Siege is the first game since Vegas 2, and Rainbow Six deemed dead after the death of the great Tom Clancy and the cancellation of Rainbow Six: Patriots. I'm curious as to why you didn't choose to pick on Need For Speed, Mario, or Zelda?

While I do respect Jon's opinion, it's not one i agree FULLY with.
AC1 was a great game for it's time, it was INNOVATIVE and FRESH but sadly it hasn't aged well over the years. If you play it now .....it's pretty ****.
While CoD:WaW did have a mundane map layout in comparison to other shooters, it has the best story in the series. PERIOD. it is nowhere near the worst CoD. That accolade belongs to CoD:Ghosts.
Please respect other's opinions, you don't have to agree with it.

Far Cry 2 is my favourite game of all time. None of the 100s of games I've played even comes close to it. Malaria wasn't too annoying when you have tablets for backup and I loved the weapon degradation mechanic. The soldiers won't respawn if you clear the surrounding checkpoints also.
