DOOM is finally here, promising all the gore and demon violence you can shake a pentagram at. Bringing a lot more to the table in terms of graphics options than seen in the DOOM beta, the full release looks gorgeous and brings that classic speed that was sorely missing from DOOM 3. These DOOM benchmarks were performed on our PNY NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 OC XLR8 4gb, Intel i7-5820K CPU and 16GB of RAM PC to see how well the game runs from 720p up to 1080p, and taking in the full range of Low to Ultra graphics settings.

Only the lighting in DOOM really has a drastic impact, with graphical texture quality remaining pretty consistent across all DOOM graphics settings. Glowing lights on the pistol, for example, are the most obvious difference between Low and Ultra graphics, but even on Low setting DOOM looks fantastic. So those of us on older hardware should still be in for a treat. Irritatingly, there was no way to turn off motion blur in DOOM, as you’re only able to reduce motion blur via the graphics settings.

DOOM Low vs Ultra Screenshot Graphics Comparison

DOOM feels like the modernising we’ve all secretly (or not so secretly) yearned for since the time of Doom and Doom II. The speed and gore feel reminiscent of the now classic games, and the updated graphics and melee kills add a modern touch that makes DOOM feel more than welcome in this modern AAA age. The game runs really well even on the highest graphics settings, but be warned - in the crazier, more bloody fights you’ll see a lot of performance start to bleed.

For example, when I had 12 enemies on screen all firing things at me as I was blasting away, I spotted noticeable drops in the frame rate on Ultra at 1080p. All the blood splatter and particle effects would choke up the FPS and so on our GTX 960, with all those enemies on screen at the same time, DOOM would lose around 8-13 FPS at times. Not a game changer by any means (as the PNY GTX 960 held a playable frame rate regardless), but worthy of comment nonetheless.

What’s your experience of DOOM thus far? Let us know if you think DOOM is an absolute graveyard smash or just a boring monster mash in the comments below and how well it runs on your computer.

I find it sad that there's almost no difference between low and ultra but we play doom for it's gameplay, not it's graphics.

For the performance, with my rigs, everything maxed out the game is always between 120-144fps.

Maxed out here with SLI on, hitting 110fps (my 110Hz screen vsync limit) without my GPUs breaking a sweat. Some parts of the game seem a bit CPU-bound or something as they drop a bit below that while not really giving the GPUs any more workout, which I'm hoping the Vulkan patch will fix once it's out.

From The video I couldn't see much difference between low and ultra. In the screenshot you see it's mainly textures, lighting and shadows making a decent difference. I hope I can run it with the graphics card I have at 1080p low.

You definitely can, even medium, I'd say. Also - reflections. It's not visible in the screenshots or the video but the reflection quality in this game is INSANE on ultra - they reflect EVERYTHING unlike in other games (similar to how UE4 reflections work). Love it!

Like Fallout 4. Low or Ultra, I don't see much different. Except for the texture. (Off topic: I'm waiting for gameplay review before I get this game)

Well, if LOW looks that good, I may just be able to OC my card happily play it on low. Would be good if I could play a demo to see if my system could still pull it.

I plan on having a Polaris card by the time that I buy this game, so I expect to be able to play it on Ultra, but the Low setting looks great anyway. The quality of base settings seems to keep getting better.

Not demanding at all considering the graphics.

To be honest I don't find the graphics that amazing to merit such high minimum requirements, I find the game a bit blurriish, probably because of the lighting effects inside and the dustwinds outside.

For the second picture I can't help but liking the low version. It is probably because Ultra adds too much dust to everything

I run the game at 1080p all ultra, haven't seen the FPS drop below 55.

Looks pretty good but damn does it need some anti-aliasing!

Extremely solid benchmark results!
I think preliminary benchmarks are starting to come out with nvidia leading amd and the 900/300 series for both companies handily beating the 700/200 series.

What does that even mean?! Of course the newer series cards are gonna have better performance.

I meant for their equivalents, ie
770 = 960
290 = 390
