Summer is Here and GD has a Feature Refresh for the Best Gaming Community Around

Written by Felix Nova on Wed, Jun 8, 2016 4:07 PM

Hey hey all you lovely GD members, summer's inbound and it's community message and update time for you GD'ers.

I wanted to share some GD insights just for GD members today. It's been a bumpy stressful year for GD so far (more on this below), but despite that I've been working hard to create a space that the old timers of GD can continue to love, while also driving forward innovation which helps keep things fresh and attracts newcomers into our warm community embrace.

First off, I want to say thanks as always to you, the GD community, for being kind, helpful and patient with one another throughout the site. You all set wonderful examples to newcomers as they find their voice here.

Unlike most other popular sites, on GD we can all come together to share our knowledge about stuff we have in common with very minimal issues from trolls. We don't all know the answers to everything, but ask and you'll often find a helpful GD'er willing to give their time to provide some guidance. And that's what makes me proudest.

So what have I got planned here on GD at the moment?

With a goal to speed up the usefulness of GD and encourage interaction, today we rolled out a button on our discussion area (we are still fine tuning its styling as it's not easy to spot yet, but it is fully functional). Click it and you can swiftly ask if your PC can run a particular game. If you wish you can even add some extra parameters to your question. Can I Run Deus Ex Mankind Divided (at 1080p on Ultra at 60FPS). Hit the discuss "submit" button and then every other member can see your question in the discussion thread and click to vote Yes or No. Cool huh?

Also today we updated the very old Can I Run It page to make it more usable, passing people directly to our game reports. So you can select your hardware, select any game on GD and then submit to open a new browser tab with the game report, for every game you want to check. This means you can quickly check lots of games pretty fast.

Also it seems like the home page redesign was a nice success.

It's our natural human instinct to become concerned with change, as it means we have to expend effort to learn something new.

So the fact that the vast majority of people really liked the home page upgrade was a wonderful thing. And this has turned in to a more professional look for the site's core landing page. As most of you know, a lot of the magic that happens on GD is found within our many GD corridors, so newcomers can often miss our juicy core that is awesome tools and community interaction.

So the new home page is a good way to help introduce people more effectively to what we do within the depths of GD and I have actually discovered more new people who turn up now click and move through to read, or visit, our internal content. Which is exactly what we are after. So that's nice.

Now a bunch of you fine GD members take a very helpful extra step in your support of GD. Getting behind our site and backing me in this crazy, fun venture. You help ensure GD is around tomorrow, despite the crazy turmoil that is website content development. You are the GD Elite.

I can't thank you enough for your support on GD. Without having the security of your backer support I really think that GD would be in trouble and possibly not be here still, as so many other similar sites seem to be suffering from. Of course we're all in this together, and even people who can't afford to back GD can help by spreading the word about our lovely GD community, sharing links on social media. One of the best ways is by being helpful and friendly to people who ask questions or want to have a chat in the discussion areas.

Some of the hardships from this year include Google continuing to be a bit "dodgy" in how it manages traffic across the internet.

How is it that no one regulates Google? Is it because they have people working in government positions or everyone is too scared to discuss the crap that they do for fear of having their website slapped down the search rankings. I long for a decent competitor to help remove the monopoly.

Let me give an example of how they are being dodgy to websites.

You know when you search for something on Google and you get a box of data turn up at the top of the search page showing you all the information pulled from some random website?

Well that means the person who searched is much less likely to click on a link to visit the website providing the data as often, as they get all the info they need from the Google search page. That is stealing the data from the original website.

Why has Google started to "roadblock" the top of the search terms with this datablock, we find ourselves asking?

  • Because users may find it more useful not to have to click to visit a website beyond Google search results.
  • But mainly because Google needs to keep making more money and knows that big, data providing websites, like GD, then lose a huge margin of their traffic to this new roadblock. And what do you think the only way to get above the "roadblock" data on the search page is? To pay Google by bidding on their paid advert space.

This year GD has lost around 20% of its traffic to this. And of course, it really isn't worth GD to pay Google for ad space, as our traffic doesn't make enough money to pay back the outgoing ad costs. And so I say again, with all of your help we remain here, despite the hugely fluctuating rules laid out by the goliath businesses that sit above us, stopping innovation as they plunder our potential earnings.

But I will spend my own money on hosting game giveaways that encourage us to talk externally about GD, and driving new ideas and refining old ideas to work better for us all.

Some unsung heroes of GD are definitely our GD admin. While not everyone can always be as active as they want, they have all tirelessly assisted behind the scenes, processing and organising the flood of information that GD is built upon, so a huge thanks to them once again.

E3 is just around the corner, next week, and it's time to get on-board the HYPE TRAIN!!! All aboard. We are already starting our coverage of the leaks and videos as we watch every corner of the gaming horizon. Please mention below what your favourite E3 highlight might be or best type of E3 leak.

Needless to say, as the weather warms up and I sip margaritas by our virtual pool here at GD Towers, I am bursting with pride because of you still going to such wonderful lengths to get involved and make GD the community that it is. Thank you GD Backers and thank you all GD'ers for your approach to one another and hopefully together we can keep making GD the most friendly, innovative, gaming community across the internet.

Hugs, your F

I'd say we should screw Microsoft over by ignoring Win 10, but I'm really not in the mood for another OS change :$. And I'm not sure if its even possible to avoid the upgrade anymore thanks to Microsoft's brilliant campaigning/forcefeeding of Windows 10 :P

This new layout is indeed all over the place, but i think it looks better than the previous one. Besides, user "SogenSamurai" already made a proposal to GD about making some minor changes to the current layout to make it more uh.. "not all over the place". I hope you (the GD team) are considering some little changes here and there. If not, then thats cool too, coz this is already the best gaming website for me.

As for the layout - it's a matter of taste. Totally fine to me! The main stuff is in the middle like it always used to be, but now you just got some extras on the sides. Big deal, it's not at all 'all over the place'...

Come on guys, lets not gripe about stuff. I am trying my best with the resource I have at my disposal, as I mentioned above.
The GD chat has always been a bit buggy, when it comes to logging in I am afraid. And its not been worth a complete rebuild to put it right.
And as for everything else, nothing is ever perfect, on any site. Things change. Style moves on. Every thing always needs refining over time. Change happens and it is almost always those people who are a little annoyed or averse to change that are loudest to say that they dont like something. Cus the many many people that like and enjoy the change...just go about enjoying it.
I didnt really write this article to have people moan about stuff, it was to say thanks to all the people that are supporting what I am trying to do, despite the incredible opposition I am facing when attempting to keep things alive here for everyone. The last thing I wanted was people to feel like this was the perfect place to voice their opposition.
If you have suggestion for GD I always welcome it on my wall. I created GD and continue to run it because I am so proud of what has been achieved here and because a huge number of people get to use the features and tools and often save time and money when upgrading a PC or buying a new game. Hugs F

As a writer myself, I find google's rapidly changing ranking methods to be frustrating. I mean one day, my articles are topping google news for around a month and the next article doesn[t even show up. I mean, what the hell? which is why i constantly have to keep changing SEO tactics but it would be so much easier if google could decide how they want to rank pages.

Aww, yeah I hear ya. Google cant stick to one clear path, otherwise their "system" would be gamed by the masses and the search results would be hijacked by the wrong results. Plus it means they would not be able to make more money by controlling the flow of traffic to suit their revenue streams.
They know almost all of the user movements around the internet and so all businesses have to buy their data for an enormous sum of money.
Which means writers like yourself and websites like GD are left with no clear public rules to manage our business around. Surviving from day to day on the whim of this uncontrolled internet traffic management system, which is also alarmingly a private profit driven company.

Yep I added a forum post a couple of years ago about this. What's required is the use of a technology called AJAX which allows data to be transferred to and from the server without the need for page refreshes. I would be behind this as it would make the site easier to use, faster and reduce bandwidth. I'd also be happy to get involved with coding such as thing if the help was needed - I write tons of AJAX related code in JS and C# every day.

Tonnes of the site is built using asynchronous javascript. Loads of the cool features from the past 3 years could not function without it.
As for coding for GD. While its a lovely offer guys, unfortunately we cant have exernal people coding for GD. It is all custom bespoke code and frame works powering GD, so learning how the site and the enormous database works would take months to learn, let alone the potential security issues if we opened up the code and database to the public.
Anyway, as I said, thanks for the kind thought.

Yeah I know, the latest features have been great. I think @UltimateGamer07 was just referring to this particular section of the site.

And I understand, at work we always get third party (cowboy) developers asking to design new sites for our clients and integrate them into the CMS themselves. It's a big no-no due to the massive complexity of our entire system which is made up of lots of individual applications.

Thanks again for all of the work you've put in, I'm sure that GD is one of the fastest growing online communities in existence.
