E3 2016 - Xbox Head Says Don't Buy Scorpio If You Don't Have A 4K TV

Written by Jon Sutton on Wed, Jun 15, 2016 4:00 PM

By the end of Microsoft’s E3 press conference I felt like we knew where we stood with its Project Scorpio console. Supposedly five times as powerful as the Xbox One, it seemed as if its launch next year would be a clean slate for Microsoft after its current console was soundly beaten by the PS4. Well now Xbox head Phil Spencer has thrown a bit of a curveball, saying if you don’t have a 4K TV, there’s going to be no benefit to buying it.

When asked whether someone with a 1080p display should hold out for the Scorpio, Spencer said “You should buy an Xbox One S, because Scorpio is not going to do anything for you. Scorpio is designed as a 4K console, and if you don't have a 4K TV, the benefit we've designed for, you're not going to see.”

To that end we can discern that the Scorpio will offer no graphical advantage over an Xbox One, aside from the obvious jump in resolution. It’s probably the easiest way for Microsoft to implement it really. It would mean every game still works as standard on Xbox One, while if you opt for the more expensive Scorpio next year, you can take advantage of 4K clarity.

“Scorpio is for the person who's got a 4K television, who's really focused on 4K gaming” said Spencer. “It's going to be a premium price over what we're selling this one for, and both of them will exist in the market at the same time. Scorpio is for your 4K gamer. And that's what we designed it for.”

It’s fascinating that Microsoft is even getting a 4K gaming console out there, but do you think it’s going to be worth the cost if the actual visuals are going to remain on par with an Xbox One? Or does a resolution bump trump graphical niceties? Let us know what you think!

Ain't that sound like a little too easy? I mean, the guy who buy a scorpio, he can then simply insert GTAV disc into the scorpio and once hes in-game the console will just gently switch from 1080p30fps to 4k30fps?How is it going to work? Most gamers won't have to wait for a 4k version of their favorite game?

"because Scorpio is not going to do anything for you." Ofcourse it will, you can finally hit the 60 fps @1080p after idk, 3 years?

What's the point of XBONE? All their exclusives come to PC anyway so why not get a PS4 instead and use your PC for XBONE games?

I doubt it will run any game in 4k at it's price point.
Perhaps a few arcade games that are not graphics intensive.
My GTX 970 was 330 US dollars, and can do 1440p @ 50-60fps in most but not all cases. When i attempted 4k with it, the frames dropped to about 20-30fps...when standing still...*

...* You need to move up to a 980 for an really good 1440p experience and a 980ti or Titan X to have any chance of a bearable 4k experience. Titan X being in the 1,000 dollar range and the TI not far behind. The new 1080 is not cheap either, but can probably swing 4K no problem. There is no way X1 Scorp will do 4K.

*...of course, I play on Ultra settings with no compromises though, so if the devs choose to nerf the graphics settings that actually matter for the consoles to achieve the "magical 4k res" when they couldn't even get a decent 1080p..nvm 1440p, they are really delusional and aiming for the wrong goal.

One of the devs of Witcher 3 already said he'd rather play W3 on low on pc than on console at all. So obviously they're aiming for even lower than low gfx but hoping the 4k will save them.

Can't beat 60 fps, you just can't. Anything below that is an eyesore for anyone accustomed to 60 or more.
4K won't save consoles, going back to being a dedicated gaming platform with decent hardware will.
The more they make consoles like PCs, the more justifiable a PC becomes to consolites.

I think it is possible because they will be looking for locked 30 fps,
Considering the new GPU is faster than 970.
And they will spend more time optimizing.

Even locked 30 fps on low will be difficult for them.
I respectfully disagree: (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/06/xbox-project-scorpio-hardware-specs-can-it-do-4k/)
The only way it will be possible is if they nerf the other graphics and textures to PC equivalent low levels.

Which would be fine by me personally since the difference between low and ultra appear minimal at best. That said I don't see the point in trying to improve graphics anymore than they already have been. Developers need to focus more on improving gameplay aspects now not graphics.

That said keep in mind that resolution is a graphics thing not a processing thing. It's more of the graphics cards job to handle higher resolution. That being said 4K is exactly 4x the resolution of 1080p and therefore needs 4x the power which its graphics card offers over the original Xbox One.

As for the processor, all we know is that it's an 8 core but I'm assuming speed of 3 to 4GHz (possibly 5Ghz) that should be enough.

And the RAM? Most likely anywhere between 12 to 24G which would be more than enough for any game.

Oh yeah I almost forgot, but I just wanted to say that I feel it's very likely that Scorpio will be using AMD's new ZEN family of processors.

@Star The difference between low and Ultra is very big, at least for someone like me who notices everything. I agree, they need to put the focus on gameplay, which has been lacking for generations due to all the focus being on graphics. Yes, I can see Zen being utilized. Doubtful it will be over 4ghz though inconsoles

But we don't know its price point? It could be $800 for all we know? I really don't see a problem with some games running 4K either, but you'd think it'd be a struggle for those graphically intensive, flagship AAA titles.

Having seen what sony has done with uncharted 4 i am ready to believe anything.
All they have to do is spend some quality time developing games.

Well, the stairs on a diagonal line will be severely neutralized, thus diagonal lines will actually look more diagonal and less pixelified. That is actually annoying to look at and takes away immersion. Particle effect are enhanced...

My big Samsung tv mounted on the wall at home not even 4K, I feel more than enough already. Do we really need 4K to maximize our gaming experience? I don't think so. Come on Microsoft, that's why you always lose to Sony PlayStation.

The bigger the screen.... the more necessary higher resolutions become... 1080P is ok up till around 32 inches or so..... but beyond that, a higher resolution would be really nice to have.

40inch. Not 4K. Already satisfied with it. 4K is just marketing gimicks. I'm not a sheep, I don't follow the trend if it doesn't make sense.

But still that would mean buying a new TV just to be able to use your console.

But it should do 1080p 60fps better than the original Xbox One, meaning there is some benefit for it.

Also, it should work with 4K monitors because they display 4k from HDMI and DP.

but what about ultra 4k on the scorpio??, the only thing this console will do is increase the resolution??, what happens to dynamic shadows or textures?

Scorpio will be better if you have the ability to play in any resolution you want, Microsoft should release a 1080p 60 fps Console not a 4K console :D

Totally agree. The framerate should really come first as 1080p was decent enough, especially on a TV further away from you.

so xbox 1 will be 1080/900p? low? and Scorpio will be 4k low? what about 1080p ultra or do people not want to play that way in the xbox-verse i feel like im totally misunderstanding this cause limiting both consoles to the low end of each resolution seems like such a waste of performance to me, maybe the ps neo will do 1080p ultra who knows

makes sense to me. If you have a 4K TV you get the scorpio. and yes I consider the bumped resolution worth it. As a PC gamer this is probably the most enticing console I have ever seen in recent history. Coupled with the "play anywhere" program of MS too. It looks like Microsoft is trying to sell Xbox to PC gamers. And its not a bad idea if you ask me.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Unfortunately Hardened PC gamers or (PC fanboys as I like to call them) would NEVER touch a console. That said if anything I'd get a Scorpio.

I think its a good idea in principle, however the thing is that if they're trying to sell Xbox to PC gamers through scorpio then its a cry to deaf ears imo, cause if a PC gamer had a 4K monitor they would already have a Rig to match.

so buy Scorpio+ buy a 4K TV that will cost you maybe 400$++ at the lowest, so you need 1000$ at least , but we don't know the price of Scorpio yet.
