Evolve Player Count Shoots Up 28,000 Per Cent Following F2P Relaunch

It probably comes as the world’s smallest surprise but player numbers for Evolve have absolutely skyrocketed, because hey, people love free stuff, no matter how good/bad it may be. It’s only been two days since Turtle Rock Studios’ asymmetric 4 v 1 multiplayer game went free-to-play, and already the player count has bumped up 28,000% and growing.

Using percentages is a nice way of making certain stats look bigger, but in this case it’s pretty much bang on the money. Evolve had a paltry average of 106 players on at any one time in June, an abysmal number for a AAA title barely a year old. It now has a current player count of 29,666, with a peak today of 40,803.

That’s an absolutely huge increase, entirely down to going F2P of course. Those numbers are still tiny compared to the F2P big hitters, but it does demonstrate there could be life in Evolve yet if 2K and Turtle Rock play their cards right. It also shows people will play anything if it’s free.

Turtle Rock decided to adopt the F2P model following the ‘DLC shitstorm' of the original launch. This involved Evolve being split up into countless special editions, with players needing to splash cash on additional heroes and monsters. Needless to say Evolve didn’t prove very popular, tanking just weeks after launch. A total overhaul of Evolve’s balancing and gameplay systems has now been done, which Turtle Rock hopes will be enough to lure players in for the long term.

Have any of you decided to give Evolve a chance now it's gone F2P? Do you believe it's a game worth playing now?

i bought evolve about 7 months ago and spent many hours in it, i liked it even when it was very hard to find a match in some days and now i'm glad that finding a match doesn't take more than 4 or 5 sec for me, and also i can play it with all my friends who couldn't afford to buy it before, but what i didn't like is how they treated me and others who paid for the game

I wouldn't exactly call Evolve a "AAA title"..."AAA" publisher maybe.. but the game concept a bit too simplistic and far from original(Depth was arguably a far better and far cheaper game).. sure it has a nice coat of paint, but lets face it, it's little more than an online multiplayer game of tag, fun for about 5 mins

Same can be said about CS games as well.

I cannot believe more developers/publishers don't take a leaf out Valve's book with CS:GO. Give the game a low price with micro-transactions. It's the best of both worlds if you ask me. No need for P2W shenanigans, but still a large playerbase.

Im going to have to greatly disagree with you on this Freeky.Yes a low price for a game is always welcome but people want the full game experience. They want to be able to get almost everything in game without having to pay money for the "cool skins" and what not.I know for me and many others we dont want to be stuck

with the same stock weapons for a long time,we want to earn better gear, not be stuck with the same crap for a long time until we get something slightly better every now and then.Yes don't get me wrong they can still put in systems where you can buy accessories but dont make it game breaking,Such as the original Evolve

The CS:GO platform doesn't sell weapon mods or weapons for that matter. It sells skins and nothing that makes the game p2w in any way, that is what Freekycheese was talking about. Dunno where you went off with your side but it isn't anything at all like what CS:GO is. You'd have the entire game unlocked, then you could either buy skins for your weapons and characters or you could earn chests.

As much as I agree with that, I doubt it would have out as good as it had if that was done right from the start hence the reason why I down-voted your comment.

Thought I made myself clear, apparently not. But basically I agree with you to an extent that it should have been free to play to begin with, however if that were the case the game probably would not have been good as it is therefore it was better for it to first be buy then become free to play.

That is a model that more Multiplayer and MMOs need to follow. I'm sure I don't need to explain why, it should be obvious.

Maybe..... depends on how much people enjoy the super simplistic concept.... and from what I've seen... super simple is what people seem to go for these days, just look at the success of LOL and DOTA 2, these type of games of course tend to flourish better as f2p titles, so this may be just what this game needed.

Something else to be said for f2p games, my only experience was with planetside 2. I practically built my pc to play that game. The hype was large for me and to be honest, actually playing that game was hell on earth. I've never been rekt so hard, but for whatever reason that just made me want to play more. A certan addictive aspect is always great for f2p success

I really liked how the game looked when it was released. But it was too expensive so i didn t even bother buying it.Since now its free to play I like the game alot. Hope they add more game modes.
I am not sure if the monsters in this game are a little too overpowered. Since so far i am on a 8 game win streak. I only played the hunters 2 times.

They should have done this in the beginning. They would have made their money. And no one would be complaining about their many DLC since it would have been a Free 2 Play game. This should have been done day one. I liked playing the Beta when it came out. I just couldn't justify the game's cost and playability with that price
