It’s always a source of amazement to me the breadth and quality of fan made content out there. With no money to be made, just a whole lot of love; players can create games on a scale which rival even the originals themselves. One in particular that's blowing my mind has just hit open beta. I’m talking about the long-lost StarCraft Universe, which was originally called World of StarCraft. After going silent for a while it’s being made available to all as an honest goodness StarCraft MMO wrapped up in the StarCraft II engine.

StarCraft Universe has been given the go ahead by Blizzard so it’s not going to get shut down any time soon. It originally raised $85,000 crowdfunding three years ago, but now the beta’s out it’s hitting IndieGoGo for another round.

It’s not just some slapped together project either. There are heaps of quests and planets to visit. Diablo-esque combat, starship mechanics borrow from FTL, and a proper grouping system for raids.

“To all those who believed in us and helped us along the way, we say thank you. SCU would not have been possible without you,” wrote Upheaval, the development team. “We look forward to seeing you all… in the worlds… of StarCraft.”

The full version of StarCraft Universe is out next month, but in the meantime you can play the beta through a retail copy of StarCraft II, or download the free Starter Edition which is enough to install the mod. Just head into the arcade and search for StarCraft Universe. Voila.

Anyone going to give this ambitious project a go this weekend?

This is quite interesting I must say. I wouldn't mind looking more into this and possibly giving it a go once it's done and out the door for all to play.

you need to own any edition of Starcraft 2 and then you need to go into arcade and then it will be in there somewhere.

this actually feels so good. i was one of the people that contributed to the kickstarter but I never knew this would actually happen some day. Gotta give props to blizzard for letting this happen and of course Ryan Winzen for doing the whole thing. Btw not really into MMOs anymore so it's sad that I might never be able to play it like I would have.

and if anyone wants to play the open beta, it's available in the arcade of sc2. you don't even need to own starcraft 2, just download the starter edition and play. the full game comes out later.

That's cool of Blizzard to do, I was just worrying about that when I saw the headline.

Perfect example of letting the community take care of itself to prolong game life. If only they'd extend the same kind of system to Diablo 3, that's a game that could use it. Not that I don't enjoy D3, but some mods could make it legendary.

dude. why should blizzard be ashamed? they're actually letting them use the sc2 engine and encouraging development. you know how any other company would throw a hissy fit if someone did that. blizzard has their hands full with sc2, wow and overwatch. they don't need another gigantic mmo right now. blizzard is actually an excellent company that actually cares about public opinion. one of the reasons they're letting this happen.

Blizzard may be better than most "evil" companies out there. But they let things like this slide only so long as it works for them.
They were more than happy to let Korea have their SC BW esports scene thrive which let them sell tons of copies of the game over there. They changed tune when it came time to release SC2.
