Up For Debate - Most Overrated Games

Written by Jon Sutton on Mon, Aug 29, 2016 2:00 PM

Ok, so we’re heading into thorny issue territory now. Overrated is a term which constantly comes up and it’s almost guaranteed to start a war of words. I don’t think a war of words is necessarily a bad thing, provided people express their opinions in a reasonable manner. After all, it’s what debate is all about.

So first things first, please avoid just naming a game that’s overrated. Head down the comments section, let everyone know what game you think is overrated, but also explain why you think this. Apart from that, anything goes!

I’ll kick things off with a few of my own. Firstly, I’d like to suggest Assassin’s Creed II. It’s alright. Good, perhaps. But I don’t think it’s this crowning achievement that plenty of others seem to think it is. The same repetitive gameplay exists as in the original, this time dragging on even longer. Unlike the original though, ACII doesn’t have that same wow factor of stepping into this incredibly vivid, historical world. It'd already been done before.

The story was a little bit better, yes, although I’d struggle to say it captivated me. Most of the time I’d forgotten what was even going on by the time I got around to another main mission. Don’t get me started on them dragging it out for two more games either. Unnecessary doesn't do it justice.

And for my second choice, well, I think I’ll be thrown under a burning bus for this one, but basically everything Blizzard has ever made. They’re usually high quality games, but I feel there’s always 10-20% added to scores as part of the Blizzard love-in. They take a proven concept and polish it to within an inch of its life. That’s fantastic for those who want to play extremely tight, well crafted games for years on end. For those looking for something new, or for a particular new mechanic or tech advance to really wow them, Blizzard games don’t really cut it. Don’t get me wrong, I had fun with WoW, Diablo, WarCraft, etc, but I just don’t think they’re quite as special as others perhaps think they are.

Over to you then, let us know your most overrated games, and don’t forget to explain why!

Red dead redemption, The world felt pretty empty and the storyline wasn't really that interesting imo. Still a nice game though.

Please don't hate me people.

My personal choice would be The Witcher 3. Beautiful, big and boring. One of the few rpg's I did not finish (and I have completed games like Two Worlds 2 for example), still waiting for me to play again.

Just a personal opinion but I think the scenario is just plain boring, and I am tired of map cleaning. It just couldn't capture the magic that makes a perfect rpg. Good game generally but not the masterpiece most people think it is.

For me? Attack on Titan (Shingeki No Kyojin if youre a weeb)
Reasons:

  1. Rips off the manga/anime

  2. Dumbed down maneuvering system

  3. You have to babysit really stupid AI
I could put in bad PC port but thats Koei Tecmo problem

I get the other two but it doesn't really rip off the anime does it? It is based on the Attack on Titan anime.

The manga and anime have same story. Rather watch the anime since you dont have to worry about you being suck at the game and enjoy all the way

I'm going with Deus Ex. Each game from the whole series begin just fine. Violence, espionage, intrigue. But as you get further you find wonky shooting, useless macguffins, and super limited powers that cut-scene character has unlimited use.

I'll go with The WItcher 3. Had so many issues. From bad performance to bad/uncontrollable in-game mechanics. First time loading the game, I had to spend an up to 1 hour tweaking settings instead of enjoying the story. I loved The W2 so much but the sequel disappointed me, still a great game just not that polished.

For me, Witcher 3

Everything is great except one thing that kills the game for me, leveling system where geralt can not possibly hold a lvl 16 sword if he is lvl 15.
That kills the game for me.

Let the downvotes begin!

That doesn't mean the game is overrated lol just cuz it has one flaw. Will upvote because I find that annoying tho (even though I dont have the game).

Well, since it got perfect/almost perfect scores, i think it's kinda overrated. I mean I know some people like that, but my opinion is that due to that feature it is slightly overrated. They could have handled that system a bit better.

This is not uncommon really, many RPGs especially those that follow the classic stats based system will require a certain level for a certain weapon. It's not a flaw, it's a feature.

Then that means you don't like most RPGs out there? Because that kind of system has been around for as long as i remember.

Exactly! That kind of feature is fundamental of RPGs both old and new.

It got tons of problems that Rockstar refuses to fix. That's my reason and also gets a bit boring after a while + hackers.

The story is too damn short, in my opinion, and the ending feels rushed..
Anyway, it's a damn good game.. 5/7

Skyrim.

The world is so damn good, but the storyline is weak..

Agreed. Exploring was the only thing that pulled me through. So few memorable quests, even in comparison to Oblivion. I hope they up their writing game for Elder Scrolls 6.

Lies! Skyrim is one huge memorable moment! Even the first time you exit helgen is a memorable moment as you walk down the path overlooking the Bleak Falls Barrow. And yes the story is weak but the world is awesome.

The term "Overrated" is subjective. People experience games different and enjoy it more than others. My opinion should not be looked at as "fact", it is solely my opinion.

Here's my list:
GTA V
Crysis (2-3)
Battlefield (After BFBC2)
Call of Duty (After Black ops 1)
Team Fortress 2
Fallout 4
Metal Gear Solid V
Gears of War (After GoW2)
Elder scrolls V: Skyrim
Dark Souls

If I were to give my reasons why I feel these games were overrated, it would literally take an entire "My Blog" section. In fact, I might just do that.

Just my unpopular opinion, but each and every rpg/mmo. Just gets to repetitive, doing the same thing over and over again. I get bored f it after a day.
