Could CD Projekt RED be veering wildly away from what we know and love about The Witcher 3 for Cyberpunk 2077? From the sounds of it they are. Evidently not content to rest on their laurels and rehash The Witcher in a sci-fi setting, CDPR has applied for grants from the Polish GameINN programme relating to creating huge open worlds capable of “seamless multiplayer”.

So a number of grants have been applied for, each appearing to hint at the rough direction CD Projekt RED is headed with Cyberpunk 2077. “Seamless Multiplayer” in particular all sounds a bit The DivisionDestiny, with CDPR seeking funding for “complex technology for making unique multiplayer gameplay mechanics, including the ability to search out for opponents, manage game session, replicate objects, as well as support for different game modes along with a unique set of dedicated tools."

If I had to hazard a guess I would say Cyberpunk 2077 is probably going to have lots of bolt-on modules and missions; possibly even with quest creation tools. Players can then hop in and out of groups to attempt these missions within an instanced open-world.

Elsewhere we also see an application for City Creation, our biggest hint yet that Cyberpunk 2077 will be set within a single, large, open sprawl. The description says this is for “complex technology for creating a huge living city, playable in real time, which (the technology) is based on rules, AI, and automation, as well as supports innovative processes and tools for making top-notch open-world games." I particularly love the phrase ‘top-notch’ being using in a Polish funding application.

Other applications include funding for Animation Excellence and Cinematic Feel.

We’re getting the sense of a lot going on behind the scenes of Cyberpunk 2077’s development, particularly in terms of CDPR ramping up its number of staff. I reckon we’re still a little way off from any sort of official reveal though, considering The Witcher 3 took the best part of four years to create.

How would you feel about CDPR introducing multiplayer elements to Cyberpunk 2077?
