If you’ve always wanted to give Star Citizen a try but haven’t been brave enough to fork over cold, hard credits for a digital spaceship, then perhaps now your time has come. Star Citizen is totally free to play for the rest of October. All you need to do is make a Star Citizen account, enter a promo code, and get lost in space.

Dubbed the Fall 2016 Free Fly, players can log in to Star Citizen and gain access to the F7C-M Super Hornet spaceship and keep playing from now until Sunday, October 30th. From the sounds of things this includes access to everything release for Star Citizen so far, including several open-world missions, the Arena Commander dogfighting module, an early version of the persistent universe and just messing around in your hangar.

The single-player component of Star Citizen, Squadron 42, isn’t included as it was recently delayed until sometime in 2017.

You can sign up for yourself here. Just ‘Enlist’ or login and then enter promo code “FALL2016” to gain access.

Before you embark on Star Citizen’s horrendously huge download however, be sure to head to its game page and check out the system requirements and see if you can run the thing first.

Anyone getting in the cockpit for a free trail? Or are you patiently waiting until the finished game?

Just retsart the luncher a couple of times and it should work. I had the same problem and that fixed it. If that doesnt work just wait for a bit and try again.

Found the problem, seemed my login name contained a typo -_-. Now the problem is that I can't find how to get the promised ship....

Go to Crusades, and then go down stairs to B platform there you will see screens press on them F and select you're ship. It will tell you on what platform it spawned (there are 10 platforms i think) and you will get you're ship there and will be able to fly it.

I get 17-24fps on 1080p low, 20-35fps 900p low, 22-38 fps 720p low. CPU is at 40-90% GPU 55-75% ussually. And in hangar on 1080p low i get 30-60fps with GPU 70-100% and CPU 40%. Athlon runs on 4GHz and HD7850 on 1025/1350 MHz. Conclusion optimisation is not that good like everybody have already staded (dough my PC is mid-high Low end). But its still in "alpha" so i quess it will be more optimised when it comes out.

I am starting to believe that the main problem for low fps comes for bad latency on their servers as PC system resources are not optimally used. Bad stuttering should be from lag as i did the CPU process tweaking from task manager (core affinity and High priority) after which every core was used better.

No wait it actually works much worse. In flight with my ship and in the station usage is GPU 10-34% CPU 60-70% with 8-13.5 fps on 720p low. This is totally unplayable. Unless you have a GTX1060/RX470/RX480 or stronger this game wont eaven run on 30fps low 900p let alone on biger res. and settings.

Too bad it is brutally unoptimized in its current state. :( I've got terrible stutter and in Crusader Server i get 22-26 fps on average in station and in space, while CPU and GPU load hang around 60-65% both. This is on Very High settings without motion blur and some light graphics tweaks.

Too bad my PC isn't as good as my internet. My laptop would burn if I played this for a long time (Sadly I wasn't able to get playable fps nor in 1080p nor in 720p)

Or is anyone already a backer? I backed a while (maybe 2 years?...) ago because of what this game could become, and even in it's current state I've more than gotten my money's worth. Though part of that could be the community. I love the community the CIG has created.

I mean, far be it from me to tell you what to enjoy, but... more than your money's worth already? Really? For a dogfighting sim and a buggy space station with almost no content? I mean, it's a nice bonus that you get to play along as the game is being developed, but let's not overhype things - this game is barely even a game yet. If its current state were being released as a final product, there's no way in hell I'd pay real money for it.

Guy's, just for reference, it's only a 25GB download, not 100GB. The estimated size of the download after the game is finished is 100GB.

Lol it's actually just 25. 100GB is the estimated size after the game is completed.

I hope optimization has been improved since the last time they had a free thing, my PC couldn't handle it even on low, at 1080p. was very choppy.

Hangar is "ok" on medium, not sure about fps but i guess around 45 or so. Online is pretty bad, even on low it feels like playing DOOM with GT630. Lots of slowdowns and low fps even on low settings. Maybe my ram..i dont know :I

just to note people, if you have low fps on the online part its due to server limiting the fps not your rig so dont worry ;)
