Up For Debate - Which Is The Better RPG, The Witcher 3 Or Skyrim?

Written by Jon Sutton on Sat, Oct 29, 2016 4:00 PM

With The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition arriving on Friday, I thought it only right that we answered that most pressing of questions. No, we know Link is left-handed. I’m talking about the ultimate swords and sorcery showdown. The eternal question to rule them all. Which is better - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Skyrim?

I have neither the time nor the inclination to tot up the number of awards for each, but suffice to say each has a teetering tower of accolades by which few other games can ever hope to compare.

On paper they’re quite similar games, yet in practice they’re extremely different experiences. Skyrim is all about crafting your own niche in its huge world with a custom build character, heaps of branching decisions and an endless supply of quests which encourage you to just potter about.

The Witcher 3 meanwhile is very much focused on being Geralt the witcher. The story branches but for the most part you’re being funneled from place to place on an epic tale. Without doubt the quality of the writing and the delivery of the voice acting is on another level too, and CD Projekt RED really nailed how to do quest design on a large scale. It seldom feels like just another fetch quest but instead it’s hand-crafted and often heartfelt.

When it comes to mods they also couldn’t be further removed. While The Witcher 3 and its two expansions could easily stretch you in excess of 200 hours of playtime, Skyrim is supported by a near limitless supply of user created content to keep playing through. The recently released Enderal mod is by all accounts almost as big as the original game.

So which of these two RPG titans wins the battle for you? Do you prefer Skyrim’s open-endedness and mod support, or are you a fan of The Witcher 3’s top notch storytelling and incredible visuals?

Question can be interpreted in 2 ways I think.
Which of the two RPGs is the best game? (Skyrim in my opinion)
Or, which of the two games is the best at being an RPG? (Witcher 3)

Graphics shouldn't be considered since there is a generation gap

Well my words on this is Witcher's graphics were/are best when it came out we can't say the same for skyrim. There were other better graphics games when skyrim was released

thing I really like about Skyrim is possibility to put anything in either hand, dual-casting spells are cool too, or casting two different spells at once - this is actually one of very few things why I like Skyrim probably even more than Oblivion :)

Can I vote for the Witcher 2? I actually lost interest in W3 early on, but I'm currently taking a fresh character through Skyrim SE and enjoying it. As others have said, I enjoy the blank-slate nature of Skyrim.I'm stealing more this time:)

I like the witcher but skyrim's gameplay is much more fun. I found the controls on the witch a bit stiff or clunky. Gerald is hard to control. (I use a PS3 controller) i also liked the map better. The witcher does have better side quests.

Both are great games. Games of different ages. I like so much The Witcher 3.

Well first you are an idiot to compare Witcher 3 to Skyrim 5. They both have generational gap. Still if you force the comparison, well I am a witcher for life

How is generation relevant here? The question which of these is better RPG shouldn't reflect graphics at all. By the same rule, Daggerfall could be compared to Skyrim.

I think he meant that Skyrim is the 5th instalment of the Elder Scrolls series, hence TES V Skyrim.

Thanks for your kind words :) Fortunately it's perfectly fine to compare things that didn't come out at the same time as one another.

Witcher 3 has a much better combat system then Skyrim. I'm just into realistic combat not like skyrim where you swing a stick from a mile away and you end up doing serious damage. My opinion not yours so bug off!

You can't compare the two.. But if i have to say my opinion, Skyrim IS the better RPG. Much as i love and adore Witcher series and CDPR, Skyrim is the better RPG because you actually ROLE PLAYING yourself by creating your own char, have the freedom to actually do everything, even if you decided to sleep all day ! In Witcher, you're not role playing, you already have a pre determined character to play based on the novel. Not saying that is a bad thing, but if you ask me what RPG is all about, that's my opinion.

Depends completely on what you prefer. The Witcher 3's quests and stories are of a higher quality and your choices are far more important to what happens next, but your character is more or less completely defined. That's where Skyrim wins, it let's you make your character exactly as you wish, ranging from appearance to combat style.

Remember that the question here is what is a better RPG. The Witcher's graphics are a lot better than Skyrim's (including SE) and also animations and mechanics are a lot better. But they shouldn't matter a piece in this debate. Also, There's a 4 year gap between the (base) games, so a visual difference is logical. So objectively I'd say they're the same, both with their advantages and disadvantage

Better RPG? The Witcher 3 is obviously the better RPG. Yet, Skyrim has me into it for almost four thousand hours and a lot of that is thanks to the modding community and all the options the game offers for character customization.

Skyrim has a lot of mods support, but The Witcher 3 is by far the better game. I've played more of skyrim than
i have Witcher 3, but TW3 is the clear winner for me. Better side quests, graphics, main story, better combat, better animations...

Both are very fun games to play, imo you cant really compare those two, its like comparing nfw with toca =p same idea but they are too different, for me better is witcher 3 since i liked story more than those in skyrim.

Well, this debate has no sense; Skyrim it's not just a game. Only those who live within the mods Community can understand what I really mean. You can put your soul inside that "thing", eventually...and it will never come back.
