EA Says No Battlefield Game In 2017 - DICE Focused On Star Wars Battlefront 2 Instead

With Battlefield 1 being a roaring success, you’d perhaps forgive EA for being tempted to ride it into the ground like the equine from War Horse and rinse the series for all it’s worth. As it turns out that’s not the case. At least for now. There will be no new Battlefield game in 2017, so you’ll hopefully see Battlefield 1 supported through to 2018 and potentially beyond.

Don’t go thinking that you’ll be totally without a new shooter fix in 2017 however. EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said DICE "won't have another Battlefield back for a couple of years," however "next year we'll have Battlefront, the Star Wars game."

Battlefield 1 will be getting a minimum of four premium expansion packs, each comprising four new maps and ushering in new factions, weapons and vehicles. The first of these, They Shall Not Pass, launches in March 2017 and brings with it the French faction.

As for Star Wars Battlefront 2, it’s going to be based on the new trilogy of movies. It’ll no doubt be arriving just before Star Wars: Episode VIII hits and Jar Jar Binks sensationally makes a comeback to our cinema screens. Just imagine the rage. The 2016 Battlefront is all about the original trilogy, although the upcoming Rogue One: Scarif DLC is tying in to the imminent prequel.

"We were really working with the old canvas of Star Wars, the old trilogy. We weren't using any of the new materials that came out of Episode 8 because our game actually came out slightly before the movie," Jorgensen said. "Next year we'll have the opportunity to leverage more of that content from the new movies and we think that'll make the opportunity much larger."

Jorgensen accepts that the chief criticism of Star Wars Battlefront was there just wasn’t enough of it. He says this has been taken on board and DICE is working on a more complete package this time around. Could we perhaps see a fully fledged single-player campaign? Hopefully. I suspect we’ll hear all about Star Wars Battlefront 2 just before E3 next year.

Glad to see EA skip annual outings for the Battlefield series? Can you see Star Wars Battlefront 2 righting the wrongs of its predecessor? Let us know!

By the new movies does he mean the prequels ( Ep 1-3 ) or the new ones ( Ep 7-9) ?

To put simply: All Star Wars lore up-til the moment Disney bought it is gone and considered unholy, so I doubt they would go back to the prequels.

I think Battlefront needs an advance vehicle warfare just like BField series. It will really gonna up the game for both players and EA itself.

I never played either. But I do play BF 4 and I think the way land and air vehicles are available to play they should also employ the same in Battle front too :)

I suggest ya go play the first 2 Battlefronts and see what that game is all about and see the similarities AND differences with Battlefield series... in other words, its not supposed to be the same

People don't realise but EA is no different than Activision when it comes to yearly releases. EA just hides it better by giving games different names.

It's was, but the engine is the same for 3 years now, why? Can't they modify the engine to FB4? It's because of this article:

Then u will get the same problems we had with BF4 when they switched from FB2 ( one BF3 ) to FB3 ( for BF4 ) devs would be working on a completely new engine and would not utilize its full potential meaning we would get bugs and glitches

if the engine is scalable, there is NO need for a new engine and the engine does NOT really limit the graphics in that case.

If that's the case than ok, but not every engine is scalable. If you went to that article that i posted, then you'll know what i mean.

I would love a map that is properly trench warfare. Kind of like the mission for the pilot in the campaign. Maybe with a special game type that works like Day of Defeat where you can only push backwards and forwards on two points at a time. Make it a proper war of attrition.

good, this means that the next BF game will again be high quality, just add a lot more weapons to BF1 and it's perfect for a couple years.

Better than 20 guns where only a small hand full are actually worth using.

every gun is worth using, unless you want to have the best gun, instead of having fun using different guns, also gun balance is such an easy thing, but for some reason Dice and other developers like Trayarch do NOT do it properly, most-likely on purpose.
In BF4 to balance things out ARs with fire rate of 600-650 should have had a 4-6x bullet to kill, ARs with 700-800 RPM should have had a 5-6x Bullet to kill and ARs with 900 RPM should have had a 5 in game meters 5x bullet to kill and then standard range for the 6x bullet to kill after 5 meters, with recoil and bullet spread going both statistically up and up due to higher fire rate, bullet to kill weapons.
