Now here’s a blast from PC’s past. Piranha Games has announced MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, an all-new single-player revival of the long-running mech battling franchise which first powered up all the way back in 1989 for DOS PCs.
In MechWarrior 5 you step into the shoes of a rookie MechWarrior pilot. A gun for hire, he has thrust himself into the (engage jargon mode) Third Succession War of the fractured Inner Sphere. As a MechWarrior pilot you can pick and choose your contracts throughout a choice-driven campaign. Harder missions will net you better rewards with which to upgrade your mech and give it an edge on the battlefield.
I have to say I have a little soft spot for proper mech games, and MechWarrior has always been just about as PC as they come. Spending hours tweaking gear loadouts and inching around maps trying to get the drop on the enemy was always great fun.
We’ve got the first ever footage for you, although it should be said that MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is still at a very early stage of development.
Piranha has said it’s aiming at a 2018 launch so there’s still a couple of years work to go. Visually MechWarrior 5 is looking a little sparse, so we’re hopeful Piranha Games can work some magic on a classic PC franchise in the coming years.
