After months of anticipation, DICE has blown the lid off its plans for the first round of Battlefield 1 DLC. The French army is the core tenet of They Shall Not Pass and it’s about time. The boys in blue were at the epicentre of all things World War 1, and in They Shall Not Pass they'll be defending their homeland across four sweeping new maps.

Verdun Heights is the first of these, and possibly a slight nudge in the direction of fellow World War One online shooter Verdun. A barrage of artillery has created a massive forest fire during the Battle of Verdun with the attacking team facing a constant uphill battle towards the huge fortresses sat atop Verdun Heights.

Next up is Fort Vaux. This looks to be Battlefield 1’s first ever map set pretty much entirely indoors. From the sounds of things it’s Battlefield 1’s very own Operation Metro. *Shudder*. Set inside the titular Fort Faux, this is all tight corridors, dark corners and hectic gunfights. Expect flame troopers to be particularly brutal in these tight confines.

It’s back outside then for some fresh air with Soissons, a larger scale map set in the commune of Soissons in northern France, near the Aisne River. It looks pretty similar to the left-hand side of St Quentins Scar in truth and will be a hotspot for tank battles. Soissons features the full complement of vehicles and will be host to random thunderstorms to spice things up.

Last but not least is Rupture. Based around the Aisne river where a number of key capture points sit on bridges, Rupture is a combination of long-range play and ambush tactics amid the wrecks of previous tank battles. The teaser screenshot looks particularly eye-catching with its fields of poppies.

Aside from the maps we also get access to the French faction. This also means new weapons, gadgets and cosmetics. A lot of these have to be detailed except for the Trench Raider Elite Class. A melee master, the Trench Raider is equipped with a powerful Raider Club and heap of grenades. Not the sort of man you want to meet in a dark bunker.

Vehicular fans will be pleased with the introduction of the new Steel Behemoth. This is an absolutely gigantic new tank which, unlike the other Behemoths, can be driven pretty much anywhere. The Char 2C tank is going to need some concentrated firepower to take down.

Slightly lower down the food chain is the Assault Tank Gun - St. Chamond. This is the most heavily armed Allied tank of the entire war, and one look at it gives you all the info you need about this monstrosity. A flank of machine guns provide the anti-infantry firepower, while the huge cannon sits on the front.

The last new ‘vehicle’ is the Siege Howitzer, a stationary weapon which fires mortar-like shells into the air for long distance barrages.

Finally the first Battlefield 1 DLC will also add a new game mode - Frontlines. I’m pretty chuffed with this because it’s a mode I’ve been calling out for since BF1 was announced. It’s a bit of a mixture of Rush and Conquest, although to my mind it’s more like classic Day of Defeat. There’s only a single flag to be fought over at any point as the two teams have a tug-of-war over the frontline. The aim is the push the enemy all back into their HQ and destroy their telegraph points. It all sounds like proper war of attrition stuff so that should be neat to give a go.

The price for They Shall Not Pass looks to be about $15, or you can snap up all four now for $49.99. With that in mind, are you planning to invest in Battlefield 1 in on top of what you've spent on the main game? Are these four maps going to be worth the outlay? Let us know what you think!

Are you buying the BF1 DLC?

Verdun Heights looks like a map that should have been in the game to begin with.

I refuse to pay for any DLC from any game. If you bought the game, you should have full access to all DLC. Want to make more money from a game you've already sold? Make a new game.

I'm in the 'maybe' camp here... I wanted to like BF1 more.. but I got frustrated with it and put it down for a while. But I want to give it another shot, and these maps and modes sound really good, so, I might just pick this one up by itself. I'm trying to avoid season passes these days, since I feel like I've been burned by them the past few times...

assuming the maps will be semi decent I will probably get the premium pass somewhere down the road. Maybe at the release of the second dlc even.
