No sooner had I finished writing up a story about a release date leak for Prey than Bethesda goes and officially announces it. It’s a lot better than the leak as well because it’s been joined by a glorious new gameplay trailer. As it turns out we don't have too long to wait either…

Bethesda has confirmed Prey will be launching on May 5th, 2017, for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which is a lot earlier than we were anticipating. All we’ve had to go on so far was a vague 2017 date. Considering how little we’ve seen of Prey so far it was easy to assume it wouldn’t be seeing the light of day until holiday 2017 at the earliest.

And now for that trailer, which is looking absolutely jaw-dropping. On this basis Prey is looking like a fusion of BioShock and Metroid Prime, so what’s not to love about that?

As usual these days there’s a bunch of ugly pre-order bonuses designed to tempt you to lay down cash ahead of launch. This includes a Cosmonaut Shotgun Pack, which is Morgan Yu’s family heirloom apparently (strange family), three Nueromods to spend on new abilities, two medkits, fabrication plans for Shotgun and Ammo, a starter kit for building weapons and tools, and a “unique upgrade to help players preserve their limited resources.”

Which all sounds like a recipe for the grossest pre-order bonus ever. Far be it for me to tell you what to do with your money but the only way to stamp stuff like this out is to not pre-order games, otherwise they’re just going to keep on doing it. The issue is made complicated yet more by Bethesda withholding review copies of Prey 2017 until launch day.

Aside from all that crap Prey looks like a fantastic game though, and we now know there’s not too long to wait.

That pre-order bonus looks toxic as hell.

Regardless, this game looks like the perfect System Shockish game to hold me over until the remake finally comes out.
