Ubisoft Forced to Make Watch Dogs 2 DLC Free to Prevent Player Base Fragmenting

There’s nothing that makes laugh more heartily than a developer being forced to renege on their awful DLC plans. With Watch Dogs 2, Ubisoft tried to have its cake and eat it, charging $60, having a season pass, and creating DLC-exclusive multiplayer content. Sometimes this just doesn’t work out, and it’s meant Ubisoft has been forced to totally overhaul its Watch Dogs 2 DLC plan in order to prevent the online player base from fragmenting.

Originally the plan was to add a whole bunch of new multiplayer modes, weapons, vehicles and clothing items as part of its season pass, but now all multiplayer content is being released free of charge.

To compensate those who’ve forked out for the Watch Dogs 2 season pass, Ubisoft is also adding some additional single-player trials, unique clothing and non-lethal weapons. Total filler, basically, which it’s had to cobble together in record time to plug the gaps.I can't honestly see the $30 season pass being worth the outlay at this point.

The good news is this means Watch Dogs 2's multiplayer component won’t be split into the haves and have-nots. Everyone will get access to the new modes, which includes a promising sounding four-player co-op mode. Watch Dogs 2 has gone full Division. You’ll be able to “explore the city and play activities together.”

As for the rest of the DLC plans, you can see this laid out below. On April 7th all three platforms are getting Showdown added free of charge. This is 2 v 2 competitive multiplayer which comes in three distinct flavours - Steal the HDD, Doomload and Erase / Protect the Servers. Steal the HDD is basically capture the flag, Doomload is king of the hill, and Protect the servers is domination with a “twist”.

“There are two main drivers behind making Showd0wn free for all of our players,” says Watch Dogs 2’s live producer, Kris Young. “The first is that we want everyone to be able to participate and play it. We really wanted to have as many people as possible playing the mode for a better challenge, better matchmaking time and quality, and a healthier, more active community.

“The other is community feedback we’ve received since we announced the original plans,” Young says. “Our community asked for more multiplayer content, and that’s also a reason why we’ve decided to make Showd0wn accessible for free for all players, while replacing it with more single-player content in No Compromise.”

Now it’s pretty neat that all players are being given the Watch Dogs 2 multiplayer content for free, you can guarantee it's because they ran the numbers and realised there wasn't enough player to keep the multiplayer afloat. It's also sure to irk those who dropped some serious cash on the season pass. They’ve been misled, at the end of the day. Let’s hope this a lesson Ubisoft can learn from - don’t announce your season pass until you’re actually confident you can deliver on it. Don’t hold your breath though, we’ve already seen them screw up with the cancelled Assassin’s Creed Unity season pass.

Any of you bought the Watch Dogs 2 season pass and feeling a bit conned? Will this be a lesson learned by Ubisoft? Let us know!

I got back into playing it a bit, much more smoother now at 60fps, not constant though. It dips a few frames here and there.

Remember the days when a $60 price game felt like an actual $60 game? And when DLCs weren't ripped out content from what was obviously meant to be the main core of the $60 game you just paid for. I miss those days.

I'm still getting horrendous performance issues in WD2, framerates drop to 5 or so for prolonged periods of time, @ 1080p Low settings.
No idea what's going wrong, so I can't pat Ubi on the back for moves like this knowing that it won't make a difference to me in the end.

Maybe its a psu or other problem on your pc,i run it on low and have 45fps+,and my pc its way less powerful than yours, check some benchmarks and maybe upgrade/fowngrade your drivers and maybe it will help.

I would mate, but considering I don't have these issues on any other game, I can only assume it's a bug or some setting gone wrong. Maybe even a memory leak. :/

Try lowering your AA both in-game and nvidia control panel. Or maybe reinstall drivers? I also read somewhere that the game favors RAM with higher frequencies resulting in more FPS. I personally hated the performance issues of the game even though I loved it. This would least make it a little bit bearable to play.

There's one thing I know about Ubisoft, and that is if they say something or make a statement, it's entirely possible that they've said something completely opposite to that few months ago, or that they will say something completely opposite in a month or two. I'm trying to say that they are a bunch of liars, and that they don't care even a little about people they are selling their products to.

Saddest thing is that they tend to make games that are actually fun and worth playing.
I haven't played any Ubisoft games in a couple of years now, I've barely even played any AAA game in that time. I just got sick of massive publishers and some developers saying one thing and then doing something completely opposite.

Frankly, I'm astonished they made this one. I can't remember the last time a new potential franchise-started was greeted with as resounding a "meh" as the original Watch Dogs received.

I don't know why but i am feeling bad for Ubisoft's development team. They produce great games in small time frame. Watch Dogs 2 was a good game. far better than Andromeda. Very less buggy. A bit demanding but still has good graphics so it's fine. They don't deserve this kind of hate. The publisher side of them is the reason the development side gets dragged into hate.

I liked the Watch Dogs 1 concept too. I got emotionally attached to that pew pew killing bastard i dunno why others didn't. Where as assassins creed is a goto game for me not lying. AC4 still comes in my top 10 games. AC syndicate was a good one too. Can't enjoy the newer ones because my hardware can't cope up. It would be best for us too if they get their sh_t together

Why did you compare WD2 to Andromeda, I have no clue. There is nothing to compare except for optimisation and even that is not a 100% objective comparison..

I am just comparing a game to another. no genre BS. Not based on deep but actually on refinement, buggyness, quality assurance only

Mafia 2 is a good one. I ran it mostly high just fine. (it's kinda badly optimized, but not as bad as Sr2 or GTA IV by a long shot)/

Far Cry 4 if you haven't played it, The Witcher 3, most of the telltale games.

This. So much this. Look at the amount of effort put into AC:Unity, and all of that in vain just cause they didn't optimize it. Poor devs.

I bought the expansions separately and they ended up being a bit cheaper than the pass would have been at the start... But yeah, Witcher 3 delivered some insane content!
Other games...not so much...

Very few season passes are worth it these days.
Witcher 3, as others have said was fantastic. You essentially got another Witcher game with the season pass.
Darksouls 3 was also worth it. I love the game, and love the DLC.

I'll give you that, W3 and DS3 were worth it, but the Biowares, EAs, Ubis and Activisions of the world make season passes worthless garbage.

Most of the AAA developers are, since they have been pushing the boundaries of milking money and screwing their playerbases for years now and when there is finally resistance, they don't know how to react properly. In case of Ubisoft, their whole PR department should be fired as far as I'm concerned, since they can never properly dig themselves out of the mess they're in. They always look like complete liars in the end....which they are.
