Gears of War 4 to Allow Ranked Cross-Play Between PC and Xbox One Players Soon

Finally, it’s time to settle the score once and for all. After months of dilly dallying and testing, PC players will soon be able to take on Xbox One players in ranked Gears of War 4 matches. The might of the mouse and keyboard against the… comfiness of the gamepad, it’s a showdown for the ages.

Importantly, it also demonstrates Microsoft’s intent to fully integrate its Xbox services between PC Windows 10 and Xbox One. Going forward it’s looking as if this is going to be a fairly standard feature, letting console players compete with PC players without barriers. It’s basically already been shown to work with Rocket League of course, however this is the first time it’s happened in a genre which could hand a noticeable advantage to mouse and keyboard users.

Ranked Play in Gears of War 4 is playable in the core and competitive playlists, with no distinction taking place between console and PC users. PC players can choose between mouse and keyboard or gamepad, while Xbox One players are restricted to the gamepad. I can see a fair few console players being up in arms about this when it’s implemented soon, and it’s an easy scapegoat for a poor performance. However, developer The Coalition has said Xbox One users may have a toggle that lets them choose between playing with Windows 10 users or not.

I suspect a large portion of the decision making behind this is to inflate the number of active users for PC players. The Windows Store hasn’t exactly been a resounding success, so it’s unlikely there are thousands upon thousands of PC players matchmaking for a game of Gears of War 4. This serves to make buying the PC version of Gears 4 a more attractive proposition.

It’s certainly going to be interesting to see which platform comes out on top in this battle. The Coalition has been busy over the last six months balancing between the two platformers, and a third-person shooter is less reliant on aiming accuracy than an FPS.

Are you going to wade into the cross-platform ranked goodness? Which will come out on top in a third-person shooter, M&KB or gamepad? Let us know!

Well this is nice , that means they will be more players too, but for me i think for Xbox users will be hard against PC users.

Keep in mind people, Xbox players can use keyboard and mouse to play their games with now. At least that's what I heard, anyone care to confirm?

This is true but its barely useable the acceleration is all wrong on the mouse and there are severe latency issues with the keyboard

I played the game when it was on demo at EGX last year. To me the mouse/keyboard didn't seem to matter too much in this game as the whole gameplay is:
1) Enter an area;
2) Find cover;
3) Shoot and keep shooting until the wave is done;
4) Advance to a further area;
5) Repeat from step 1.

It's a console shooter that doesn't have PC roots like Far Cry, COD or DOOM. So I somehow doubt the PC users will see a massive advantage just because of the mouse when the whole style of the game isn't catered to it.
...now if they were to make Overwatch cross-platform... ;)

So... a PVP shooter where you have to hide behind cover and whoever sticks his head out first loses?
Sounds boring as sht.
Also what stops you from flanking the players hiding behind their cover?
I think I'll stick with Overwatch.
Not that I would actually even consider buying a UWP exclusive product of any sort ever.

True. I actually had good time playing CoD online on PC with a controller, didn't feel there was a huge disadvantage. Felt very natural with a controller.

CS with a controller though. Not a chance.

Shooter played with a controller to me is like taking a beatifully designed italian supercar and driving it in some muddy unpaved forestways. It shouldn't be done. It's a sin. But it's just me...

Has anyone played the Gears 4 port yet on UWP? Is it any good? I've been wanting to play it, but I had a few bad experiences with UWP and so I held off.

I tried a demo ta EGX last year and the performance wasn't bad. I've heard it's even better now. But I haven't tried as the game style is too consolized for my liking.

It really depends on how good the "aim assist" for the console players is.
If it's too much Mouse + Keyboard users will feel like they're facing cheaters, if it's too low even the best Console players won't rise in ranks above a certain point.
I personally am entirely against the idea of shooter cross platform PVP, because no matter how you spin it, Microsoft will have to give the console players some sort of "aimbot" or they won't be able to compete - so much for an even playing field.
