One of the biggest shocks to come out of Microsoft’s humdrum E3 conference was the reveal of 4A Games’ Metro Exodus. The third game in the Metro series based on the bestselling novels, Metro Exodus takes the franchise’s tried and test story-driven first-person shooter combat into a massive open world. The gritty shooter blends combat and stealth with survival horror and exploration, bearing more than a passing resemblance to the excellent STALKER series.

Set four years after the events of Metro: Last Light, Metro Exodus starts in Moscow but quickly expands, taking in an epic journey across post-apocalyptic Russia. Nuclear radiation has turned the local fauna exceptionally aggressive, including a gigantic bench-pressing bear capable of tearing down entire walls.

“In Metro Exodus, Artyom and a band of survivors must flee the shattered ruins of the Moscow Metro and embark on an epic, continent-spanning journey across the post-apocalyptic Russian wilderness,” explains 4A Games. “Explore vast, non-linear levels, lose yourself in an immersive, sandbox survival experience, and follow a thrilling storyline that spans an entire year in the greatest Metro adventure yet.”

Metro: Exodus will be launching in 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
