The Original Half-Life has Just Been Patched Almost 19 Years After Launch

It’s been some 19 years since the original Half-Life launched, a prospect which is starting to make me feel very old indeed. For Valve though, Half-Life is never going to grow old. Despite approaching the two-decade mark, Valve has just rolled out a new patch for Half-Life. In 2017.

The patch notes don’t exactly make for glamorous reading though, and it’s more a case of Valve tidying up the rough edges and any other final niggles unearthed by the Half-Life community. It’s hardly Half-Life 3, but there’s life in the old dog yet.

That fact hasn’t stopped every website under the sun cramming the words ‘Half-Life 3’ into their titles. Rest assured, I’ve read through these notes a few times and there is nothing pertaining to any other Half-Life title. I think we’ve all painfully come to the conclusion that it’s just never going to happen.

Half-Life 2017 Patch Notes

  • Fixed crash when entering certain malformed strings into the game console. Thanks to Marshal Webb from BackConnect, Inc for reporting this.
  • Fixed crash when loading a specially crafted malformed BSP file. Thanks to Grant Hernandez (@Digital_Cold) for reporting this.
  • Fixed malformed SAV files allowing arbitrary files to be written into the game folder. Thanks to Vsevolod Saj for reporting this.
  • Fixed a crash when quickly changing weapons that are consumable. Thanks to Sam Vanheer for reporting this.
  • Fixed crash when setting custom decals.

Good on Valve for continuing to support their titles at least. Their current output may be a little limited at this point, but there’s perhaps nobody, bar Blizzard, better at breathing new life into their back catalogue.

Hey nice pc you got there. I am thinking to build the same but with 16gb ram and higher mhz. How is yours perfom? It it good? I will use it only for gaming nothing else. No multitask. Is it good a ryzen 1700?

Intel cpus still beat ryzen in games while you're not doing anything else (thus no streaming). The r5 / i5 will be enough, no need for overkill, unless you want to or planning on a long term cpu life

Ryzen gets higher 0.1% and 1% FPS so I would say that is more important as that is usually the FPS you get when it's most action packed.
Also R5 1500x and above give above i5 performance in games, basically 90-100-105% of the i7 7700k performance.

Correct. I would suggest the r5, simply because of the more cores (if you take the hexa version). Maybe in the future games will support even better multicore workload

The 1700 is very nice but GreekBlood is right. If you are only gaming, the r5 or i5 is all you need.

I see. Well the think is that i am a guy who dont upgrade often. Probably i will use it for 4-5 years without upgrading. See my current pc :) so yes i need future proof

r7 1700 OCed to 3.6Ghz(super easy no voltage tweak OC) will last until 2021-2022 no probs, to after Zen++/Zen3. :)
