It was only a couple of months ago that I put Yakuza 0 to bed, comfortable in the knowledge it was one of my games of the year. Now we’re already gearing up for the launch of the next Yakuza title, Yakuza: Kiwami, a total remake of the original Yakuza that arrived on the PlayStation 2 back in 2006. Sega’s just dropped a brand new trailer, welcoming fans back to Kamurocho for a reimagining of Kazuma Kiryu’s skull-crushing adventure.

Some light spoilers for Yakuza Zero coming up, as Yakuza: Kiwami follows the events afterwards. Kiryu has been sent to prison for 10 years for the murder of the Dojima family patriarch, is expelled from the Yakuza and ¥10 billion of the clan’s money goes missing. The entire Japanese underworld gets wind of the situation and is on the hunt for the missing cash. Cue ridiculous melodrama, chatting up hostesses, a sprawling plot of betrayal, politics, redemptions and shocking twists as Kiryu looks to right the situation.

For returning players, Yakuza Kiwami does a fair bit to mix things up. Aside from the switch to a new engine and a major graphical upgrade,d Kiwami adds 30 minutes of new cut-scenes, heaps of new side-quests, side-activities, re-recorded dialogue and more.

Yakuza: Kiwami is coming to PlayStation 4 on August 29ths. And for the love of all that's good and holy Sega, just put the damn series on PC already. There are no exclusivity rights to speak of, there’s nothing to stop you, and PC players would benefit hugely from getting their hands on this fantastic and rejuvenated series.
