Sometimes little miracles do happen, and Activision has managed to dig out code from a lost Crash Bandicoot level that was made for the original game but was never playable, remaking it for the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy remaster. The original Crash Bandicoot is absolutely punishing as it is, but the lost Stormy Ascent level is just something else. It’s around four times longer than any other Crash Bandicoot level, and Activision’s experienced testers burned through an average of 60 lives when beating. Now I see why it didn’t make the cut.

Stormy Ascent is available to download for free now from the PlayStation Store if you grab it before August 19th, when it’ll become $2.99 paid DLC.

In other Crash Bandicoot news, it’s sold absolute gangbusters. In the UK it is the bestselling game of 2017, period, beating the likes of Horizon: Zero Dawn, Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Ghost Recon Wildlands individual platform releases. 20 years later, Crash has still got it.

“The fan response to Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy has been tremendous with the title landing at number one worldwide in physical game sales, even though it was only on shelves for two days in June. We’re thrilled that there seems to be a whole lot of people out there who love Crash as much we do,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision. “To thank Crash fans, we’re excited to release Stormy Ascent, the infamous unfinished level from the original game for the very first time. And it’s free to fans for the first month. We look forward to watching some epic speed runs online!”

We're still hopeful Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy makes its way to other platforms at some point, as all signs indicate it's just a timed exclusive for Sony.

Anyone brave enough to give Stormy Ascent a go? I’ve given it a download so I’ll let you know how it goes after the weekend!

Crash is still a great platformer. Though I do prefer the originals since the hitboxes and much tighter and allow for precision landings, this is a sweet bonus for those who still love Crash after all these years. Maybe once Skylanders finally dies, Spyro can get a remaster trilogy too, along with a new game in the future. Spyro has always been my favorite platformer series from that gen anyway.

I still can't decide if I like Spyro or Crash more.

Crash is harder, but Spyro has much more interesting levels if you ask me, plus all the neat powers he gets through the original trilogy add depth.

Got me there. The main thing that was always the best about Spyro was & still is the lvl design.

back in the day my sister played CB 2 without ever losing a life or dying until she got midway through the game, I think she could do this level with dying only once
