PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is becoming a little ridiculous at this point. The battle royale shooter is now the most popular non-Valve game in Steam’s 14-year existence, attracting 481,291 concurrent players over the weekend and pipping Fallout 4 to third spot. It now sits behind just DOTA 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Never ones to sit and rest on their laurels, Bluehole has also outlined the major August update coming to PUBG today, as well as addressing the thorny issue of loot boxes.

We’ll start on the loot boxes and get them out of the way before the extensive patch details. These were announced last week as a means to fund a Battlegrounds tournament at Gamescom 2017, and also served as a convenient method of testing loot crates. Fans weren’t at all happen that loot crates were being added to an Early Access title, and understandably so.

“While our intention was and still is to add the full feature to the game when we move into actual release, we do need to test it prior to launch and at Early Access so that it is stable and ready to be fully introduced to our community,” explains PlayerUnknown.

“The idea of testing, prior to full implementation, is at the heart of adding every new game feature in our game, and this includes the crate and key system which we believe will serve as the foundation of a healthy economy after launch. This is an economy that would and should benefit all players - both who are willing to pay and who are not willing to pay for vanity items. It is important that all our players are able to enjoy the various items that will be provided for customization, and it is even more crucial that we have a stable self-sustaining economy that maintains the value of the items you have purchased or gained.”

Fortunately, the loot crates are cosmetic items only, for the time being at least. Two of the crates are free to open but must be bought with PUBG’s in-game currency, while the final Gamescom Invitational crate requires users to purchase a key with a real cash to unlock.

Here’s what you’ll have a chance of finding in each crate:

As for the Month 4 patch, there are a bunch of new changes. The highlight will be the new 1st-person server option for both Solo and Duo game modes. If you opt for this, anyone choosing 1st person mode will be matched together, as 3rd person obviously has significant advantages. Aside from this, Bluehole has also undertaken server optimisation and client-side optimisation, reworking memory usage, terrain rendering and vehicle physics, which should help deliver a more stable experience.

The only major new content is the addition of a new weapon - the Mk14 EBR, a marksman rifle with sniper rifle attachments that can be obtained from care packages.
