And so we come to round 13 of voting for the best game series of all time. 36 games have already been knocked out and we're nearing the semi-finals. This time it's the turn of a few grizzled stalwarts and some fine young upstarts. It's The Sims v Assassin's Creed v Unreal v Dragon Age, in our quest to discover the best game franchises ever. Ding, ding, ding, let's have a clean, fair fight.

Round 13

The Sims

There was a time when The Sims was much derided, but then the gaming collective got a little bit of common sense and realised not every game has to be engineered for people who want to kill things. Of course, some of us still found a way to do this in The Sims. The sound of my Sim drowning in his ladderless swimming pool still haunts me to this day. The Sims has been a driving force for the PC industry thanks to welcoming in an audience that may never have been interested in typical videogame fare up to that point. Sandbox in nature, The Sims is all about creation, design, and generally just messing around. It appeals to our inner architects, social meddling, and desire to experiment rather than just 'finish'. It has sold 200 million copies thanks to its veritable treasure trove of expansion packs and add-ons.

Series began: 2000

Total Sales: 200 million

Best-selling game: The Sims 2 (13 million)

Main Games:

  • The Sims
  • The Sims Online
  • The Sims 2

  • The Sims Pet Stories
  • The Sims Castaway Stories
  • The Sims Carnival
  • The Sims Medieval
  • The Sims Social
  • The Sims FreePlay
  • The Sims Mobile

Assassin's Creed

A series that is still less than a decade hold, there are nonetheless 18 different Assasssin's Creed games. It came from nowhere and swiftly became Ubisoft's most popular gaming franchise. There's a historical appeal here that's seldom found in other third-person action games, blending stealth, political subterfuge and parkour antics with gloriously realised ancient cities. Ubisoft was perhaps guilty of laying it on thick with the endless annual outings, but after a year, Assassin's Creed could be back with a bang thanks to AC: Origins.

Series began: 2007

Total Sales: 100 million

Best-selling game: Assassin's Creed 3 (12.88 million)

Main Games:

  • Assassin's Creed
  • Assassin's Creed II
  • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
  • Assassin's Creed: Revelations

  • Assassin's Creed II: Discovery
  • Assassin's Creed III: Liberation
  • Assassin's Creed Identity
  • Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China
  • Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India
  • Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia

Unreal

I remember reading about Unreal and seeing all the adverts in magazines, urging fans to pick up a Voodoo 3DFX graphics card in order to see it in all its glory. It looks totally basic now, of course, but back then it really felt like a peek into the future. The Unreal series garnered a bigger following when it went the multiplayer route with Unreal Tournament, famed for its lightning quick action, stunning maps and immense mod suppport. The likes of Facing Worlds will live long in the memory, and many a coffee-buzzed LAN session was had gunning for M-M-M-MONSTER KILL.

Series began: 1998

Total Sales: 12 million

Best-selling game: Unreal Tournament 2004 (2.87 million)

Main Games:

  • Unreal
  • Unreal Tournament
  • Unreal Tournament 2003
  • Unreal II: The Awakening
  • Unreal Tournament 2004
  • Unreal Tournament 3
  • Unreal Tournament (Reboot)

Series Spin-offs:

  • Unreal Championship
  • Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict

Dragon Age

It's a teeny bit mind-blowing to think that the Dragon Age series started two years after Mass Effect. While BioWare's sci-fi RPG series was forward thinking, Dragon Age was resolutely old-school. It was the modern reimagining of Baldur's Gate, despite never quite succeeding on a storytelling level. Nevertheless, Dragon Age has garnered quite a following, and after the Mass Effect Andromeda fallout, it's probably the biggest weapon in BioWare's armoury right now.

Series began: 2009

Total Sales: 13+ million

Best-selling game: Dragon Age Inquisition (4.29+million)

Main series:

  • Dragon Age: Origins
    • Dragon Age: Awakening
  • Dragon Age II
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition

Series Spin-offs:

  • Dragon Age Legends
  • Dragon Age Journeys
  • Heroes of Dragon Age

Mannnnnnnn! Another brutal pool. After much thought (and trip down memory lane) I'd have gone with Assassins Creed. Unity being the only black mark will not erase all memories of the other great games from the franchise. Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed Syndicate.. :)
I'm not even gonna talk about the other ones cuz of the fear of making the wrong choice.

I have loved every Assassin's Creed game that I have played so it is getting my vote. I have only played all of them through number 4 though. I haven't played any of the newer ones after number 4

Play AC Rogue. It has got nice story. U can ignore unity and syndicate because the are abomination as AC games.

i agree with him there. Rogue was the last best ASC game with good optimization and a really great story. ASC Unity was the start for the series going downhill and Syndicate gives a feeling of the Arkham series instead of giving a feeling of being an Assassin.

Even tho Unreal is great, im voting for Unreal out for spite and disappointment of just how bad the rest of these three franchises have become (the sims started to fell apart with the sims 3, assassins creed with somewhere between ac3 and ac: black flag, dragon age was doomed with DAII).

The main problem here is "unreal" greed and lack of love for making videogames, its as simple as that !

ps Dragon Age: Origins is in my TOP 10 Videogames of all time for sure.

for me it's tough decision between Unreal (Tournament) and Assassin's Creed,
finally I gave vote to Unreal, because it's way more fun to play and less frustration with controls compared to AC

AC. In fact, I'm replaying 1 these days. Albeit repetitive and pretty short, it still is a classic/favorite for me and probably many more (than the already 64).

Combined with the Embers animated short film, it really gave closure to Ezio's story.

Revelations is a gem for sure. The scene where Ezio meets Altair is worth the price alone :) An amazing rush of emotions that...

I found the AC games great because of the story. The gameplay wasn't that great if I'm completely honest, they made the game to easy to win.

To be honest, that complain arose way back in the second game itself. But I get where you're coming from and hope Ubisoft adds difficulty options.

Quoting Jon here once again to clear any misconceptions.
"OK we've explained this a few times now - this is literally just a question asking which franchise you think is better. That's it. Imagine if someone asked you 'do you prefer Saving Private Ryan or You've Got Mail'. I imagine you could answer that, despite the fact one is a romcom, the other is war movie.'

Sorry Lion, but I have to agree with Shaheryar and Jon on this one. Personally I actually prefer this type of comparison, then going by categories, for some reason it feels more personal.

Also voted Assassins Creed btw

I disagree, AC Rogue had excellent characters, Unity had good characters, Syndicate had ok characters and AC III and AC IV did NOT have good characters.

Just stop being stuck to one thing. I know ur feel and You don't know how great i am a fan of EZIO too. The character of EZIO is like have nostalgic effect. But Change is inevitable. EZIO one is classic but u know I enjoyed AC 3 too. It's just so good. You cannot compare any AC game with each other. DIFFERENT TIME, DIFFERENT LOCATIONS, DIFFERENT CHARACTERS. They all are good.

AC:2 + Brotherhood were best imo, starting with AC:3 Ubisoft just started milking the franchise :/
