It's round 11in our mission to determine the best videogame series in 2017. We've got an eclectic mix for you this time around, including Ensemble's beloved Age of Empires, Ubisoft's long-lost Prince of Persia, Bethesda's mighty Elder Scrolls and the gone but not forgotten Silent Hill. You just need to vote for whichever you think is the best game franchise in 2017 out of these choices, and only one of these will make it through to the semi-final.

Round 11

Age of Empires

I'm sure more than a few of us have a soft spot for Age of Empires. Ensemble Studios' real-time strategy series was one of the most popular pick up and play franchises of the 90's and served as a perfect introduction to the RTS genre. That doesn't mean it isn't without some serious strategy chops though, and Age of Empires II refined this in just about every aspect. There were more nations, heaps more units and some of the best multiplayer gaming around. Age of Empires is a series that's a little on the backburner right now, but we suspect it won't be long until Microsoft thrusts AoE back into the limelight.

Series began: 1997

  • Age of Empires: The Age of Kings

  • Agen of Mythology: Extended Edition
    • Age of Mythology: Tale of the Dragon
  • Age of Empires: Castle Siege

Prince of Persia

Playing the original Prince of Persia on the school Apple II PC was one of my earliest gaming memories. Not a particularly happy one either as it is was brutally hard. Prince of Persia is a series that's been around for longer than some of us have been alive though and continues to remain important to this day. However, it wasn't until Ubisoft picked up the rights to Prince of Persia and rebooted it in 2003 that it really broke the mainstream. I've done the research and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time sold an astonishing 14 million copies across all platforms. As with Age of Empires, Prince of Persia is a series which has lost its way somewhat, but it surely can't be long until Ubisoft treats us to another adventure with the eponymous prince.

The Elder Scrolls

Prithee see yonder mountain cresting the horizon? Well, thee can make merry and go there. But sire, what if I want to explore this deepest, darkest dungeon? You may as you wish, for all of Tamriel is yours. And thus, The Elder Scrolls was born. The archetypal open-world RPG, The Elder Scrolls has been nothing short of a phenomenon. Its ambitions are only matched by its bug count. Ever since The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, the series releases have been met with fever pitched hype. Skyrim is now one of the best-selling games of all time and today, six years after its launch, thousands still log in and play every day thanks to the stellar mod support from the community, aided by Bethesda's Creation Kit.

Series began: 1994

Total Sales: 40+ million

Best-selling game: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (30+ million)

  • The Elder Scrolls: Arena
  • The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall

  • The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard
  • The Elder Scrolls Travels: Stormhold
  • The Elder Scrolls Travels: Dawnstar
  • The Elder Scrolls Travels: Shadowkey
  • The Elder Scrolls Online
  • The Elder Scrolls LEgends

Silent Hill

There are few words in the English language that can provoke dread quite like Silent Hill. This series is truly awful, in all the right ways. The iconic misty American town was only ever a thing because of the PlayStation's limited hardware, the fog providing the perfect cover for an abysmally short draw distance. It's since become an integral part of a horror series which feeds on the fear of the unknown; of what lurks in the darkness, or behing the thin veil of reality. Sadly the cancellation of Silent Hills means we may never see this beloved series again, but P.T. was a fittingly terrifying send-off. Konami, you will never take it off my PS4.

Series began: 1999

Total Sales: Unknown

Best-selling game: Silent Hill (2+ million)

Main series:

  • Silent Hill
  • Silent Hill 2
  • Silent Hill 3
  • Silent Hill 4: The Room
  • Silent Hill: Origins
  • Silent Hill: Homecoming
  • Silent Hill: Downpour

Series Spin-offs:

  • Silent Hill: The Arcade
  • Silent Hill: Orphan
  • Silent Hill: The Escape

That was cruel to put all of those in a single poll, Jon. Just plain cruel.. :/
For the first time I'm relieved I missed my chance to vote.

Well sorry that i haven't played it, like alot of other games. But if it makes you feel any better i don't mind trying it. Can't say the same for the rest of the ES community though.

I played Skyrim for like a couple of hours, got bored (plis no hate :P). But Prince Of Persia, was an integral part of my early PC gaming days. Have a lot of fond memories. Especially of them babes :P (cut me some slack i was a kid)

No slack needed, they look gorgeous. But above all else, I liked how they weren't portrait as victims. Have had enough of that in games & in live.

Ohh right, I was a kid so didnt really know much about worn out tropes and cliches, but now that I think about it, all of the leading ladies were like "Strong, Independent women who don't need no man" which is like a character trope now, but they did it at a time when it actually mattered and not many dared to do it in the games industry I mean.

Yup. I know now it's the "new" normal, but in the old days games were made to sell & to earn money, so they made the women look like they needed help and all the other stuff.

1 simple reason 4 this. In the beginning of gaming there wasn't much interest in it from women. I don't think many women cared 4 games in general, much less for the men, that played & made them.

And if by some chance, I don't get down-voted 4 this, I'll consider it a minor miracle.

xD you never know when the downvotes might start flowing in.
I get what you're trying to say, the target demographic for most games is kids or early male teens, so its obvious the male character is gonna be the hunky saviour and the heroine is gonna be the beautiful damsel in distress. Funny how story in games have developed. I mean look at the game called "Her Story". That's some real progress and it makes me feel we've achieved something, in an industry which is increasingly becoming shadier by the day. Still haven't bought the game though :P
I will someday

I think I'm one of the rare few that doesn't look at games as "games".
To me, they are more like interactive stories where you get to explore the story, not just a single character. Sounds strange, but I look at those that play games like people who read books. With "games" you get way more of an insight into the mind of the story, then you would by reading a book.

I know :) I don't consider an up-rezzed version of a 20-year-old game being back is all, in the same manner I think Assassin's Creed took a year off last year even though the Ezio collection came out.

Yeah, I think the HD remaster is the tester for whether we actually get a new one. It's blatantly going to be Windows Store exclusive though, and hence sell terribly.

I personally liked Unity because you could use any weapon you wanted (Spear, sword, etc). Game is not too bad after all the patches. Syndicate had its moments and I mostly hated the combat but I liked Evie and Jacob so it was ok.

I personally loved unity and syndicate, people hate it, because of the bugs and initial poor optimization of syndicate, plus the numerous releases, couple games a year, became too much, too often, but Unity was awesome, hundreds of people in the city and you could grab to just about anything, plus all the houses you can go in without it being a seperate level to be loaded.

I went ahead and voted AoE. When I am torn like this I vote for the underdog. I did the same for Starcraft when I was torn between it and The Witcher. I really can't say I prefer one over the other so I voted for the one with less votes.
