Our mission to find out which game series is the best of all time continues. Now it's time for Round 15 to find the best game franchise in 2017. An all-star lineup includes the biggest shooter franchise of all time, among others. It's Batman Arkham v Wolfenstein v Call of Duty v Dark Souls, and there can be only one game to make it through to the semi-finals. Over the course of 20 rounds, we will be pitting the biggest gaming franchises of all time against one another in order to determine the definitive list of the best game series in 2017.

Round 15

Batman Arkham

For a brief period of time, Rocksteady's Batman Arkham series was one of the most highly regarded in the world. Indeed, Batman: Arkham Asylum is one of the finest games the previous generation had to offer. Batman: Arkham stands as living proof that you can have too much of a good thing though; the series on a steady decline since. Batman: Arkham Knight was still excellent once we could actually run it though, the Batmobile adding a visually arresting new gameplay mechanic to proceedings. As a complete series, Batman Arkham is hard to beat, although we can't help but hope that the talented folks at Rocksteady head to pastures new for their next title.

In 1992, the Wolfenstein series took its first steps towards how we knew it today, single-handedly popularising the first-person shooter genre. It was nothing less than revolution, and truly one of the most influential games to have been made. Over the years the series of reinventions, ranging from the sublime (Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein: The New Order) to the disappointingly average (Wolfenstein (2009). Since MachineGames took charge though, the series has been reignited in a gloriously schlocky manner. The New Order was one of the finest shooter campaigns of the last decade, and it's easy to understand why Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is one of the most anticipated games this year.

Call of Duty

Nothing less than a mega-hit, Call of Duty is now the current biggest gaming franchise on the planet. Even in a perceived off-year, such as COD: Ghosts and COD: Black Ops 3, they sold 27.52 million and 26.37 million respectively. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is the real fly in the ointment, but Activision is looking to put the series firmly back on track with Call of Duty: WWII. Once the foray of PC gamers, Call of Duty is now a Rockstar and Doritos-fuelled console splatfest that's wormed into the mainstream like few other series could ever dream of. For all the negativity, seemingly nothing can stop Call of Duty in its tracks. PS: Call of Duty and Call of Duty 2 have never been bettered. Thanks and goodnight.

The spawner of a million horrific means, the Souls series has a lot to answer for. But beneath the absolute edgelords at the centre of its community, spouting 'git gud' at anyone who will listen to them in their endless echo chamber, lurks one of the hands down finest action series in existence. From Software denied gamers many of gaming's modern luxuries, preferring instead an old-school marriage of challenging gameplay, punishing bosses, and a feeling of reward that is genuinely earned rather than handed to you on a plate. For Sony, the Souls series will always be the one that got away. After publishing the sublime Demon's Souls, it bottled it when From reared its head with Dark Souls. The rest is history.

Total Sales: 14.7 million

Best-selling game: Dark Souls (5.97 million)

Our Favorite Comments
"This was a tough one. Souls is great and the first two Arkham games were awesome. Sadly Rocksteady did not have a hand in Origins and AK (they did the console AK) which knocked the series down. I had to give it to Souls. Wolfenstein is good but it's tripped up a little here and there. COD..."
