Our mission to find out which game series is the best of all time continues. Now it's time for Round 15 to find the best game franchise in 2017. An all-star lineup includes the biggest shooter franchise of all time, among others. It's Batman Arkham v Wolfenstein v Call of Duty v Dark Souls, and there can be only one game to make it through to the semi-finals. Over the course of 20 rounds, we will be pitting the biggest gaming franchises of all time against one another in order to determine the definitive list of the best game series in 2017.

Round 15

Batman Arkham

For a brief period of time, Rocksteady's Batman Arkham series was one of the most highly regarded in the world. Indeed, Batman: Arkham Asylum is one of the finest games the previous generation had to offer. Batman: Arkham stands as living proof that you can have too much of a good thing though; the series on a steady decline since. Batman: Arkham Knight was still excellent once we could actually run it though, the Batmobile adding a visually arresting new gameplay mechanic to proceedings. As a complete series, Batman Arkham is hard to beat, although we can't help but hope that the talented folks at Rocksteady head to pastures new for their next title.

Series began: 2009

Total Sales: 40 million

Best-selling game: Batman: Arkham City (14.3+ million)

Main Games:

  • Batman: Arkham Asylum
  • Batman: Arkham City
  • Batman: Arkham Origins
  • Batman: Arkham Knight

Series Spin-offs:

  • Batman: Arkham City Lockdown
  • Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate
  • Batman: Arkham Underworld
  • Batman: Arkham VR

Wolfenstein

In 1992, the Wolfenstein series took its first steps towards how we knew it today, single-handedly popularising the first-person shooter genre. It was nothing less than revolution, and truly one of the most influential games to have been made. Over the years the series of reinventions, ranging from the sublime (Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein: The New Order) to the disappointingly average (Wolfenstein (2009). Since MachineGames took charge though, the series has been reignited in a gloriously schlocky manner. The New Order was one of the finest shooter campaigns of the last decade, and it's easy to understand why Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is one of the most anticipated games this year.

Series began: 1981

Total Sales: Unknown

Best-selling game: Wolfenstein: The New Order(3.9 million)

Main Games:

  • Castle Wolfenstein
  • Beyond Castle Wolfenstein
  • Wolfenstein 3D
    • Wolfenstein 3D: Spear of Destiny
  • Return to Castle Wolfenstein
  • Wolfenstein
  • Wolfenstein: The New Order
    • Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
  • Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Series Spin-offs:

  • Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
  • Wolfenstein RPG

Call of Duty

Nothing less than a mega-hit, Call of Duty is now the current biggest gaming franchise on the planet. Even in a perceived off-year, such as COD: Ghosts and COD: Black Ops 3, they sold 27.52 million and 26.37 million respectively. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is the real fly in the ointment, but Activision is looking to put the series firmly back on track with Call of Duty: WWII. Once the foray of PC gamers, Call of Duty is now a Rockstar and Doritos-fuelled console splatfest that's wormed into the mainstream like few other series could ever dream of. For all the negativity, seemingly nothing can stop Call of Duty in its tracks. PS: Call of Duty and Call of Duty 2 have never been bettered. Thanks and goodnight.

Series began: 2002

Total Sales: 250 million

Best-selling game: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (30.67 million)

Main Games:

  • Call of Duty
  • Call of Duty 2
  • Call of Duty 3
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  • Call of Duty: World at War
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts
  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
  • Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
  • Call of Duty: WWII

Series Spin-offs:

  • Call of Duty: Finest Hour
  • Call of Duty 2: Big Red One
  • Call of Duty: Roads to Victory
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops  DS
  • Call of Duty: Zombies / Zombies 2
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified
  • Call of Duty: Strike Team
  • Call of Duty: Heroes
  • Call of Duty Online

Souls

The spawner of a million horrific means, the Souls series has a lot to answer for. But beneath the absolute edgelords at the centre of its community, spouting 'git gud' at anyone who will listen to them in their endless echo chamber, lurks one of the hands down finest action series in existence. From Software denied gamers many of gaming's modern luxuries, preferring instead an old-school marriage of challenging gameplay, punishing bosses, and a feeling of reward that is genuinely earned rather than handed to you on a plate. For Sony, the Souls series will always be the one that got away. After publishing the sublime Demon's Souls, it bottled it when From reared its head with Dark Souls. The rest is history.

Series began: 2009

Total Sales: 14.7 million

Best-selling game: Dark Souls (5.97 million)

Main series:

  • Demon's Souls
  • Dark Souls
  • Dark Souls II
  • Dark Souls III

Our favourite comments:

This was a tough one. Souls is great and the first two Arkham games were awesome. Sadly Rocksteady did not have a hand in Origins and AK (they did the console AK) which knocked the series down. I had to give it to Souls. Wolfenstein is good but it's tripped up a little here and there. COD became a throwaway game with it's yearly milkings.

Batman all the way. The First "Souls" game "Demon Souls" was awesome, but after that I disliked them. Call of Duty was great through the first Modern Warfare game, but then they turned to crap also. Wolfenstein games are awesome as well, but they just haven't ever really pulled me in like the Batman Arkham series has.

Gamedebate has the most wierd and unusual community , no offense. But how in hell did Farcry outperformed LoZ and both mass effect and metal gear outperformed Mario as "The greatest Franchise of All time" ?

and now CoD outperforms BA and Wolfenstein ..

and btw where is that kid asking why we compares a jrpg with a FPSs with an action-adventure video game :|

I think it is more that some people have just never played those games in question, so automatically prefer the alternative. The Far Cry one kind of blew my mind considering how generic it is, but Mass Effect beating Mario was just LOL. Obviously they are totally opposite series, but one has great gameplay, the other doesn't. Mass Effect is ok, but I'd rather just read a great sci-fi novel.

IMO 2 out of 4 ME games were good, only managed to finish 2 Zelda games(got bored with others) and I have probably never finished a Mario game. I don't hold them on some golden pedestal and in my mind Monster Hunter beats them all.

Oh and even the latest Zelda is copying Far Cry so it must be doing something right ;)

Ugh, this is bad, CoD is winning.
Good thing I love Dark Souls and it's the second best. Gotta vote for the second best and hope it will pass CoD soon.

Call of duty is winning bcoz it has become one of the best FPS series of all time. People express hate bcoz many people do so. Most people donot want to say they love CoD just bcoz others won't accept it. I'm saying in common that people need to express their own opinion.

The only way you can say that CoD is the best fps in any way is sales. They rip off so many 12 year olds with $60 yearly updates and skin packs and extra maps so they make over $100 a year from most of their fanbase. The games are not a genre changer, nor does it excel at anything except sales.

Imagine how much i was hated and called names for playing world of warcraft while in school. The games are not that bad its just ridiculus to get a new one every year to me

I wait for batlefront 2

Funny enough the one thing all these franchises have in common is that they started to decline after the first game. But they still have great games in there. Tough choice but i'd say i enjoyed the Arkham series the most out of all of them.

I think that RtCW and Arkham City were both better than the first in each series, Wolfenstein's only bad game was the 2009 game. I haven't played any of the Souls games but I know that Dark Souls was largely more popular than Demon Souls. I would say that the CoD decline started with MW3.

To everyone who voted CoD, I am disappointed in all of you. Whether you prefer fantasy RPG, sandbox action, or fps fun, only one of these choices is the wrong answer. Wolfenstein beats CoD in every aspect. There is nothing that CoD does better besides sell $60 updates. I hope you all understand the mistake you made.

I'm gonna try to be as polite as possible here since this isn't youtube. But there is NO WRONG ANSWER HERE. Some people just like COD and there's nothing wrong with that, the poll literally asks for your opinion, so I think it's wrong for people to tell others what to vote. Probably about to get downvoted again but I just felt the need to say this.

Wow, i'm sorry for having preference of some games that don't happen to line up with your preference. I quite love the zombies mode from Treyarch's Call of duty, it's extremely fun with quite an amount of replayability. To me the zombies mode beats every game on here. It's just my preference, sorry you don't like that

Why wouldn't it be? I agree the last few were pretty bad with the exception of Black Ops 3. But I really enjoyed the modern warfare and black ops series and i'm sure i'm not the only one. It was one of the most important FPS games IMO.

Soulsborne series for me. I love everything about those games; from the hard bosses to not holding your hand with anything. Plus the games have so much depth. When I'm bored at work sometimes, I just go on Reddit and talk lore theories with people, because there is that much hidden story in the game. Its just fantastic.

That's a cheap answer. To answer that Call of Duty - a series that thrives on $60 updates every year and an incredible amount of 12 year olds asking parents for money - is a better series than Wolfenstein - a series that helped transform the fps genre into what it is today - because you haven't played it is unthinkable
