And here we are, at the final round of the first knock-out stages. These are final games that stand a chance of being crowned the best videogame series in 2017. All you've got to do is vote for your favourite game franchise to boost its chances of making it to the final. It's Gears of War v Mortal Kombat v Uncharted v Borderlands. Let's make it a clean fight.

Round 16

Gears of War

Halo may be the more recognisable, but among the Xbox hardcore, there are few more important things than a new Gears of War. Marcus Fenix and co's gruff adventures were breakthrough third-person shooter successes, laying a blueprint for cover-based shooters that has been followed for years to come. The well of original ideas may have dried up a little lately but the Gears of War franchise remains one of the best, and grittiest, co-op series around.

Series began: 2006

Total Sales: 27+ million

Best-selling game: Gears of War 2 (7 million)

Main Games:

  • Gears of War
  • Gears of War 2
  • Gears of War 3
  • Gears of War: Judgment
  • Gears of War 4

Series Spin-offs:

  • Gears of War: Ultimate Edition

Mortal Kombat

If you want your game to sell a crap ton of copies, just say that kids can't play it. It doesn't have to be clever, it doesn't need to be mature. It just needs heaps of violence, nudity and vulgarity and they'll snap it up. Just look at GTA. Long before GTA was doing its thing though, Midway was shocking parents and grossing out playgrounds with its ultra-violent fatalities. Few games let us rip the spinal column out of a person before Mortal Kombat, and few have since. Mortal Kombat was given a rebirth once NetherRealms rebooted it in 2011, transforming from gory fun to a genuinely excellent fighting series with heaps of content.

Series began: 1992

Total Sales: 35 million

Best-selling game: Mortal Kombat 2011 (5.9 million)

Main Games:

  • Mortal Kombat
  • Mortal Kombat II
  • Mortal Kombat 3

  • Mortal Kombat: Special Forces
  • Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition
  • Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
  • Mortal Kombat: Unchained
  • Ultimate Mortal Kombat
  • Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe

Uncharted

Sony's baby, the Uncharted series is a testament to just how far the incredible developers at Naughty Dog have come since the days of mascot platformers like Crash Bandicoot. The Last of Us may be their magnum opus, but over the course of four (and soon to be five) games, they've delivered the ultimate pulpy adventure that awakens the inner Indiana Jones in all of us. Clearly inspired by Tomb Raider, the Uncharted series set a new benchmark that came full circle when the Tomb Raider reboot aped Uncharted in almost every conceivable way. Where Tomb Raider thrives on gritty storytelling though, Uncharted is a constant, no-holds-barred thrill ride that can slap a grin on anyone's face.

Series began: 2007

Total Sales: 36.7 million

Best-selling game: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (9.33 million)

  • Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
  • Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

Series Spin-offs:

  • Uncharted: Golden Abyss
  • Uncharted: Fight for Fortune
  • Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection

Borderlands

Many have tried the loot shooter, yet many have failed. Gearbox's Borderlands is without a doubt the jewel in the studio's crown. I know, it doesn't exactly face stiff competition from Aliens: Colonial Marines, Duke Nukem Forever and Battleborn, but that's to take nothing away from the hilarious, addictive roller coaster that is Borderlands. The original set the template and then the sequel took us to the stratosphere. The thrill of near-infinite weapon variety still feels fresh to this day. Roll on Borderlands 3.

Series began: 2009

Total Sales: 26 million

Best-selling game: Borderlands 2 (13+ million)

Main series:

  • Borderlands
  • Borderlands 2
  • Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!

Series Spin-offs:

  • Borderlands Legends
  • Tales from the Borderlands

A tough ask between Uncharted and Borderlands... but I'll go with the former. I've just got too much of an attachment with Nate and the crew.

As an older gamer I have to go with Mortal Kombat on this one. I really like the Uncharted series as well, but Mortal Kombat has been with me for over half of my life. I have a nostalgia associated with Mortal Kombat like few other games. My friends and I used to party like there is no tomorrow and then sit our drunk & stoned @sses down to play Mortal Kombat against each other back in the early and mid 1990s. Nothing better than a drunken brawl of Mortal Kombat with a house full of friends.

Borderlands for sure. I love that series so much and wish Gearbox would hurry up and give us BL3, or at least some new content for 2.

I loved bl2, but the headhunter dlc not being included in the season pass was the only thing I didn't like. The fact that it wasn't included kept me from buying them so I never experienced those
