Raiders of the Broken Planet’s Prologue will be launching on September 22nd for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, developer MercurySteam has announced. The asymmetric 4v1 co-operative shooter pits a team of four into narrative-based missions on an alien planet. At any point, another player, dubbed The Antagonist, can invade their session and fight alongside the bad guys. It all sounds a bit like Borderlands meets Evolve, and MercurySteam has big plans for it.

Raiders of the Broken Planet’s Prologue will be joined by its first paid campaign, Alien Myths, priced at a, their words, not mine, “staggeringly low” (hold me) €9.99/$9.99/£9.99. It contains a smattering of new characters, missions and a stand-alone sci-fi story. The Wardog Fury, Hades Betrayal and Council’s Apocalypse campaigns will be coming at a later date.

“We want to be a developer in constant dialogue with our audience and ethical in our dealings at all times,” said Enric Alvarez, Studio Head at Mercury Steam. “Games are expensive and sometimes disappoint after all the media hype. We think allowing players to jump in for free is fair and if they like what they see, paying a reasonable price for more content is a better way to win them over.”

The free part Alvarez refers to is Raiders of the Broken Planet’s prologue, which includes two missions split across four stages, multiplayer playable characters and access to both singleplayer and multiplayer game modes. Back in the old days we used to call these ‘demos’.

Anyway, Raiders of the Broken Planet is out on September 22nd, and we’ll let you know nearer the time if it’s up to scratch.
