We’re barreling towards The Evil Within 2’s Friday, 13th October release date faster than you can say ‘there’s a serial killer hiding in your bathroom’, although actual in-depth looks of it are few and far between. Resident Evil maestro Shinji Mikami has taken a bit more of a backseat for the sequel, handing the reins over to John Johanas in an effort to let younger talent shine.  As such we’ve been eager to see what Johanas has brought to the table. On this basis of this hour long playthrough of The Evil Within 2’s second level, it’s every bit as sick and twisted as we’d hoped/feared.

Tango Gameworks have always had a knack for creating weird abominations, and Buzzsaw Lady is no different. She’s got several decapitated heads hanging loosely from her neck, flailing arms, a gigantic buzzsaw grafted onto an elbow and legs to die for.

It’s The Evil Within alright, although some of the environments are much larger than anything seen in the original. Tango Gameworks has been pretty upfront about going for larger, more open levels, connected together with tight linear segments we’ve come to expect from The Evil Within. The third of the four videos shows off a map at the five-minute mark, stretching off across an entire town, including side-missions and other activities.

The first game had its detractors but I thought it was largely excellent, and everything about The Evil Within 2 seems to be growing and improving upon it. Whether that’s enough to win over the haters remains to be seen.

The Evil Within 2 is out on Friday, October 13th for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
