Could Crystal Dynamics be Teasing a New Legacy of Kain Game?

This is speculation in the extreme, but my inner fanboy couldn’t resist when I noticed Crystal Dynamics’ Twitter account began actively tweeting about its cult Legacy of Kane series throughout the week. Be still my beating heart.

It all began on October 12th when @CrystalDynamics tweeted out a fairly innocuous message about where the series began, writing “Published in 1996 by @CrystalDynamics, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was the first of a legendary series introducing fans to Nosgoth.”

In truth, it’s quite easy to brush that under the carpet. Then just a day later they return, this time saying “"Raziel. You are worthy." Joanna Wolska's #Inktober entry features our favorite wraith Raziel. Check out more here: http://artstation.com/joannawolska

Again, it surely must be a coincidence. Yet yesterday, October 20th, Crystal Dynamics returned the well once more, tweeting out a simple quote from Raziel himself, saying "I am Raziel, first-born of His lieutenants. I stood with Kain and my brethren at the dawn of the empire." Hnghgh.

Either the person in charge of Crystal Dynamics’ Twitter account is very bored indeed, or, and this is me going full conspiracy theory, a new Legacy of Kain game is in the works.

Unfortunately, there are bits of evidence that fly in the face of this news. Crystal Dynamics is already confirmed to be working on an Avengers game in conjunction with Eidos Montreal and Marvel. It also seems certain that Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a real game considering the numerous leaks. That doesn’t exactly leave much room for a studio to work on a new Legacy of Kain title. It is easier to envisage publisher Square Enix outsourcing a remaster or a remake though, just to test the waters and see if there’s an appetite out there for its classic franchise.

Legacy of Kain, for the uninitiated, is a series of action-adventure games featuring the titular Kain, a vampire looking to restore balance. While it varied from game to game, Legacy of Kain always had an interesting balance of action, puzzling-solving and exploration, alongside some top-tier world building and atmosphere. The series has lain dormant since Legacy of Kain: Defiance back in 2003, aside from the Nosgoth multiplayer spin-off.

Fingers crossed there's something, anything, to all this, and we'll update you as we hear it.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh yes, fingers crossed here, too! I have fond memories of the original games. They were the first video games that made me want to know everything about the voice actors behind the characters. I loved watching the behind the scenes videos from the last two games in the series, with Simon Templeman and Michael Bell, and also René Auberjonois, along with the late, great Tony Jay, hamming it up in the outtakes.

Would love to get my hands on an updated version of the Legacy of Kain series, whether it just be a remaster so that it runs on current tech without jumping through hoops as well as a few visual updates so it doesn't look like complete ass (Soul Reaver didn't age well). Or a full on reboot with modern tech and controls

I used to worship these games back in the day, one of the main reasons I came to love the genre. :) Really hoping something comes to fruition, this franchise deserves a second chance. As a side note, I consider Nosgoth to be a travesty. A waste of resources and a shameful use of a good IP.

I still worship LoK and will impale every naysayer I can get in my hands.

Couldn't agree more, impalement has always been my favorite method of dealing with non believers. :)

I'll believe it when I see it. I'm sick of the rumors and speculations of these AAA companies! After that Dead Sun screw up I'm not wasting time on these devs.

If Square Enix is involved in any way, shape, or form then I'm definitely avoiding this, especially since they canned a perfectly good looking LoK game before.

They literally ruined development of Dead Sun to create that crappy online only mp pvp focused Nosgoth garbage.

Btw EA is doing the same to that Star Wars game, just throwing that out there to let you all know what you should expect given the example above.

It would be great but I am not very optimistic about it...
