This is speculation in the extreme, but my inner fanboy couldn’t resist when I noticed Crystal Dynamics’ Twitter account began actively tweeting about its cult Legacy of Kane series throughout the week. Be still my beating heart.
It all began on October 12th when @CrystalDynamics tweeted out a fairly innocuous message about where the series began, writing “Published in 1996 by @CrystalDynamics, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was the first of a legendary series introducing fans to Nosgoth.”
In truth, it’s quite easy to brush that under the carpet. Then just a day later they return, this time saying “"Raziel. You are worthy." Joanna Wolska's #Inktober entry features our favorite wraith Raziel. Check out more here: http://artstation.com/joannawolska”
Again, it surely must be a coincidence. Yet yesterday, October 20th, Crystal Dynamics returned the well once more, tweeting out a simple quote from Raziel himself, saying "I am Raziel, first-born of His lieutenants. I stood with Kain and my brethren at the dawn of the empire." Hnghgh.
Either the person in charge of Crystal Dynamics’ Twitter account is very bored indeed, or, and this is me going full conspiracy theory, a new Legacy of Kain game is in the works.
Unfortunately, there are bits of evidence that fly in the face of this news. Crystal Dynamics is already confirmed to be working on an Avengers game in conjunction with Eidos Montreal and Marvel. It also seems certain that Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a real game considering the numerous leaks. That doesn’t exactly leave much room for a studio to work on a new Legacy of Kain title. It is easier to envisage publisher Square Enix outsourcing a remaster or a remake though, just to test the waters and see if there’s an appetite out there for its classic franchise.
Legacy of Kain, for the uninitiated, is a series of action-adventure games featuring the titular Kain, a vampire looking to restore balance. While it varied from game to game, Legacy of Kain always had an interesting balance of action, puzzling-solving and exploration, alongside some top-tier world building and atmosphere. The series has lain dormant since Legacy of Kain: Defiance back in 2003, aside from the Nosgoth multiplayer spin-off.
Fingers crossed there's something, anything, to all this, and we'll update you as we hear it.
