Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is out and our initial impressions are very positive, both in terms of the campaign and the excellent PC performance. On both these points tough, it turns out developer MachineGames was lent a helping hand by none other than Doom maestros id Software.

In a classic case of you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours, id Software, developer of the original Wolfenstein 3D, lending a helping hand to MachineGames throughout development. Both shooter powerhouses fall under the umbrella of Bethesda publishing though, so it’s a natural fit.

Id Software helped with the creation of “a lot of environment art” for Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus as they “have a lot of collaboration going on.” It wasn’t just a one-way street though, with MachineGames creating assets for last year’s DOOM. Sounds like a great way to keep the artists occupied throughout an entire development cycle.

The contributions from id don’t end there though of course. Wolfenstein 2: TNC runs on the same id Tech 6 that powers DOOM, built by, you guessed it, id Software. It seems the two have been working in tandem on both tech and content, which is just as well as they’re two of the last bastions of AAA single-player shooter campaigns. On that front, it’s mission accomplished.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus is out now. We’ll have a review for you shortly but in the meantime be sure to check out our Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus PC Performance Report.
