EA’s been talking a big game with its recent financial results, confirming what we’d all suspected - a new Battlefield game is due to launch within the next fiscal year. FY2019 runs from April 1st, 2018, through to March 31st, 2019.
Considering DICE’s steady slate of games it seems reasonable to assume the new Battlefield title will be ready to launch by next holiday season. DICE has been alternating yearly between Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront recently, so a return to military shooters is due after Star Wars Battlefront II’s launch.
"The core of our fiscal 2019 is a full slate of sports titles and their associated live services, plus new live services from Star Wars Battlefront II," said Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen. "We will add the next Battlefield game, and move into the action genre with Anthem. We expect our subscriber base to continue to grow, and for our new mobile titles to benefit from players looking for deeper experiences with higher production values."
EA’s two big titles next year, aside from its slate of sports games, is going to be BioWare’s Anthem and this unannounced Battlefield title.
Speculation is naturally mounting is mounting as to what the next mainline Battlefield title could be. Battlefield 4 has demonstrated enormous sticking power despite the arrival of Battlefield 1, so it would make a great deal of sense if DICE were to go back to modern theatres of war for Battlefield 5. The other route DICE could possibly go is World War 2, back to where it all begin with BF1942. Another sci-fi outing seems totally off the cards though, with the Battlefront series filling that void nicely.
