The good thing about Eurogamer is it’s a bit bloody loud. That meant only Felix, sat at the booth next to me, could hear my girlie screams as an alien dropped onto me from out of nowhere, for the tenth time and this time ripped my head clean off my shoulders in one powerful swipe.

We had the chance to go head-to-head with Aliens: Colonial Marines’ developers in a brutal team multiplayer match, us plebs and journos playing the hapless marines and the devs handling a team of xenomorphs...

The odds were firmly stacked against us, especially when half of our marines scattered in various directions from the off. Sure enough, they were picked off almost instantly as the rest of us huddled together, blindly firing at shadows.

Our arena was a rocky planet covered with various broken structures, affording the aliens plenty of nooks and crannies to skulk in, and only our trusty motion detector gave us any warning they were close. Of course, as with Doom 3’s torch, you can only clutch the motion detector or your gun at any given time. There’s nothing quite as terrifying as lowering your rifle to discover you’re surrounded by the buggers...

The action was fast, frantic and gory, everything you’d expect from an Aliens game. Of course, we’re most intrigued by the single player campaign, which we’re hoping will capture the brooding atmosphere of the movies, and make up for the recent Aliens games which have been clunky at best.

Some of the death/kill animations still need some work but the bounding aliens appeared to have far more controlled mobility over the map than we have seen achieved in previous game versions of the franchise.  This is the same TDM map of Aliens Colonial Marines that was demoed earlier this year at E3 and Rezzed. To date the devs have always taken the role of aliens in the TDM demo and this causes us a moment of speculation. What do you guys think...

Do they insist on playing as the Aliens because that side of the game is still clunky and unfairly balanced, at this stage in development?

Or is it because they are saving the alien bounding best for those that buy the game upon release?

Its likely we will have to wait until Aliens: Colonial Marines release, February 12th 2013 to find out...
