Uhuh, didn’t see that one coming when we knew who was behind it. It turns out though, The Astronauts are also comprised of a bunch of ex-People Can Fly devs who worked on the Painkiller series, leading to this, Witchfire; a hyper-violent, fast-paced shooter set in a gothic world full of arcane horrors.
Predictably enough, Witchfire looks gorgeous. The Astronauts are using the same photogrammetry technology used for Ethan Carter to create these near photorealistic environments. It’s actually very similar to how it’s done in Star Wars Battlefront 2. Witchfire is built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 4 though, and Astronauts “believe we can push the tech even further, with new tools, hardware, and all the experience we gathered during the development of our first game.”
It looks like it’s shaping up pretty decently, and they’ve obviously got some pedigree. The Astronauts have said it’s still early days though, so they’re not confirming much beyond that it’s coming to PC. From the looks of things, Witchfire is probably headed for a 2019 launch.
