And now it is time to celebrate the darker side of gaming. Not all games come out fully formed, capitalising on all the latest bells and whistles in your new $2000 system. Optimisation is a thorny issue, and an area in which even the largest publishers,  with the biggest budgets, can still slip up.

They're the sort of games which can't reliably give you a solid frame rate, or they crash randomly, or can't reliably use your GPU or CPU at their full capicty. Here we've got the 10 worst optimized PC games of 2017, compiled using our Optimization Score found on each and every game page.

Rank Game Optimization Score
1 ARK: Survival Evolved 2.4
2 PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds 2.9
3 Conan Exiles 3.3
4 Agents of Mayhem 4.4
5 The Evil Within 2 4.8
6 Car Mechanic Simulator 2018 5.0
7 Ghost Recon Wildlands 5.1
8 Rime 5.3
9 Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 5.5
10 LawBreakers 5.7

Give yourselves a pat on the back because, on the basis of these results, the Optimization Score is most definitely working. You've voted ARK, PUBG and Conan Exiles as the worst offenders of 2017. Anyone who's played any of these three games would find it difficult to disagree.

PUBG and Conan Exiles have been in Early Access, of course, so we can sort of let them off the hook, but ARK: Survival Evolved entered 1.0 and it's still a buggy monstrosity with a horrendous frame rate.

Of these 10 games, three of them currently use Denuvo (Conan, Ghost Recon and Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3) while a further two have had Denuvo removed this year (Rime and Agents of Mayhem).

I can't really comment on Car Mechanic Simulator as I've never actually played it but I can attest that Ghost Recon Wildlands doesn't run fantastically. Its excuse is that its open world is just ridiculously gorgeous, meaning you need a very decent gaming PC to run it anyway.

Aside from this, I'd say the only real surprise is Lawbreakers. Having put some time into the beta test, I found it ran almost perfectly. I can't really see why it would have such a low score at all unless something has changed between now and then.

What do you think of this list? Are these genuinely the worst optimized games of 2017, or do you think something else has got away with it? Get voting for your worst and let us know what you think below!

Not only is ARK poorly optimized, but there are all kinds of critical bugs that have pretty much existed since early access launch.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3, The Evil Within 2 are the worst games and their score should be under 2/10.

Since my gpu died and I'm getting the GTX 1060. I've been using the AMD 7750 2GB version playing pubg 30fps 1050p after the update before the update I had to play 720p or something higher with resolution scale 70 in which case it's gotten a big optimization update.

Dunno about Wildands, it's seems more of the visually demanding type rather then simply unoptimized.

Can't possibly agree with Ark and PUBG though, especially Ark. Been so many years in development, and still runs so badly.

Agree, Wildlands seems running just fine, it's settings really give huge range of options so if the article were based on Ultra Settings, then it's just demanding not unoptimized.

PUBG 1.0 running in a celeron G1840 and GT 1030: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=calFn1Cc7gk it is well optimized since the full game release.
It even runs on my old HD 5770 1GB which used to get 10 fps before the full release: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeI_IjHsYbQ

ARK, PUBG is at least trying and did improve since beginning of the early access. ARK just doesn't really give you a feeling of improving.

Also Lawbreakers? It is like option for those 10 people still playing it... :-D

And AC Origins, despite me really liking the game, would deserve a spot.

  1. AC Origins deserves to be on that list (i7 6700k or the like users may disagree but you're the minority ,sadly)
2.Ghost recon runs faar better than sniper GW3..my rig had a constantly low fps on maxed out settings in GW3(45-50)

With Ghost Recon Wildlands I think the game is just really demanding on pc and not necessarily bad optimization. I mean look out the world, it's so immerse and when you compare the graphics on pc to console, its' totally night and day.

Yeah the game was very good looking but, I had to play on medium settings in order to keep over 60fps.

why players :C with the lastest patch the game runs at 60+fps in ultra with a gtx980 and a ryzen 5 1600 that is plenty well optimized for me
i see people with ramsters (hamters) in a smooth gameplay

you probably wont be able to play at ultra, but you should be able to play on high. Might get frame drops in the city and jungle though.

Gave vote to Rime cause at least PUBG offers something (You know... players moving around, cars, physics, some kind of interaction and there are some high quality models). Rime on other hand looks so simple if You ignore it's art style that I just can't understand why it runs like poor garbage.

PUBG isn't that bad at optimization, my laptop can be considered to be one of the low-end PC, I got around 30-35FPS, the devs are trying their best somehow

if 30-35fps is ok with you, you might as well get a console

Optimization is less a question of how well a game runs, more how it runs versus how it looks. PUBG looks awful, and shouldn't be so difficult to run. Assassin's Creed Origins looks incredible, and an incredible looking game requires a decent PC to run it.

the game has some issues yes, but it is far from being called a badly optimized game
