Early gameplay footage of Hitman Absolution (the first murdery outing for the anti-social baldy killer in seven years, incredibly) pointed towards a more arcadey experience, with Agent 47 taking down dozens of enemy guards, while creeping through an enormous library.

However, the brief demo level we played was pure old-school Hitman, something that made us very happy indeed...

Pushing our way through a heaving Chinese market, filled with hundreds of NPCs milling around doing their weekly shop, we were tasked with finding and eliminating our target: some greasy bigwig executive who we’ll call ‘Roger’. With so many people around, we had no idea how to pick out Roger - until we were prompted to use Agent 47’s first new ability.

A push of the ‘instinct’ button and the screen swished over to a nearby pagoda, surrounded by heavily armed guards. There in the middle, Roger was busy arguing with someone on his mobile phone. Problem solved! Apparently the instinct ability can be used to figure out patrol routes and escape paths too, to get Agent 47 out of those all-too-common tight spots. You know, like when a cop walks into the room just as you’re stripping a dead janitor for his uniform, that kind of thing.

Well, we could’ve simply pulled out our dual silencers and drilled Roger several new earholes, but we decided to try a more low-key approach. Sidling up close enough to eavesdrop without rousing suspicion, we heard our target placing an order for high-grade narcotics on his mobile. An idea formed - if we could find some drugs, we could maybe poison the powder with blowfish extract from one of the nearby stalls, hand deliver the goods to the slick-haired nancy, and stroll away laughing as he collapses writhing on the floor. Job done!

We wandered off in search of the good stuff, and eventually found a suspicious alleyway with a policeman sat at the end. We wandered up, all casual-like, but the cop was having none of it. His gun came up and he ordered us to freeze. At this point you get the option to fake surrender, with Agent 47 raising his arms - until the cop steps close enough to grab. A second later, we had his weapon and the hapless policeman was in a headlock. You can use captured enemies as human shields if necessary, but we decided to simply snap the poor sod’s neck and get on with our drugs hunt.

Through a door and up some stairs, we despatched two more cops in the same manner before stumbling across an absolute goldmine: a top-floor room overlooking the market, with a sniper rifle conveniently set up in the corner. All thoughts of Grade A coke vanished as we set our sights on the centre of Roger’s greasy head and sent a bullet straight through his sunglasses. Victory!

Unfortunately our celebrations were cut short by a squadron of guards, who burst in and proceeded to ventilate me. I fought back with everything I had, but Agent 47 took a lot of damage, visually represented by a static graininess that takes over the entire screen. I tried hiding in a cupboard, but peeking out confirmed what I already knew: I was surrounded and they weren’t about to fall for that fake surrender trick again. Twenty seconds later, my lifeless corpse flopped to the ground, arse raised in the air ready for some unceremonious post-death trauma.

So far, Hitman Absolution is exactly what we wanted: classic Hitman gameplay mixed with crisp, grimy graphics and levels filled with hundreds of NPCs, who react in exactly the way you’d expect - the second we fired that shot and Roger hit the deck, the crowd began to shriek and scatter realistically. New abilities such as Instinct should freshen up gameplay, although we’re still huge fans of the originals - time to go replay Blood Money until Absolution hits shelves...

I don't think you're gonna be able to run this one, buddy. Your GPU might be a problem.

Superb! I also saw a number of other ways to take him out in walkthroughs released earlier. So many different directions will sure keep the replayability(not a word, I know ;)) quotient high. Thanks guys! Another great preview :)

I love the series. I remember when the first 2 came out I didn't have the money to buy a good enough rig to run them. I could only play them 4/5 years after they came out. Blood Money was the best. The "Crows" mission was epic!
