Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom was supposed to be the big tentpole release this month, until its unfortunate delay to March 23rd. Bandai Namco’s helping to ease the wait somewhat with an extensive gameplay trailer, taking us through more than 25-minutes of footage that delves into the new real-time strategy skirmish systems as well as the more traditional RPG elements.
The first section of the video is dedicated to the RTS skirmish mode. In this mode, players order little versions of game’s characters around a battlefield and face-off against armies of enemies. There’s a simple rock-paper-scissors mechanic at play here, drilling RTS down to its simplest and purest form. Players have little forts to capture or demolish, as well as order their band of troops around to capitalise on enemy weaknesses. It's all a little bit like Pikmin or Little King's Story.
The rest of the gameplay footage then shifts to more traditional JRPG elements, including exploring the overworld and getting stuck into some real-time battles. Enemies actually appear on the overworld once again, so there are no randomised battles if you want to simply try and avoid them.
Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom is out on March 23rd for PC and PlayStation 4.
