Creative Assembly has dropped the first in-engine trailer for Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia, focusing in on the Alfred the Great’s victory at the Battle of Edington. Not only was his victory against the Viking invaders a turning point in history, it also marks the beginnings of Thrones of Britannia.

The entire trailer is either raining, oppressively cloudy, or snowing, so top marks to Creative Assembly for nailing that British authenticity. It also looks eerily like Bristol city centre on a Saturday night, in a textbook example of art imitating life.

I am a little bit sad that the story comes to a close in 1066, putting paid to any dreams I had of recreating Braveheart (obviously the greatest war movie of all time). Still, mustn’t grumble, I can still take my West Seaxe army and dominate the British Isles. I’ll make it my aim not to die from hemorrhoids like Alfred though. No, I shall blaze out on the battlefield in heroic style.

Alfred’s not alone in his conquest either - each playable faction leader will have their own unique historical events and dilemmas to face, providing players with the opportunity to rewrite history and see what may have been.

TW: Saga - Thrones of Britannia is coming to PC later in 2018.

Recently finished watching The Last Kingdom and I'm kind of looking forward to playing this, although I haven't played a total war title yet.
