Here's an 8-Minute Demo of How Nvidia's RTX and GameWorks Ray Tracing Technology Works

Written by Stuart Thomas on Sun, Mar 25, 2018 2:10 PM

Nvidia has been making a heck of a big song and dance about its RTX real-time ray tracing feature for its upcoming GPUs, but just what does do and how does it do it? A new behind-the-scenes bares all.

Up until now, real-time rendering of ray traced light has been nothing but a pipe dream, but with the GameWorks Ray Tracing technology we get rat traced area light shadows, raytraced ambient occlusion, raytraced reflections, reference path tracing with NVIDIA OptiX AI Denoising, and instant lightmap baking preview.

It’s complex and incredibly demanding, but the results speak for themselves. Right now we’re a fair ways off from visuals like this in-game, but over the next three or four years, we should really begin to see RTX ingratiate itself and, hopefully, revolutionise visual fidelity. Realistic lighting has long been the missing link for photorealistic graphics, but here could be our answer.

Is this supposed to replace PCSS and HBAO+?

Is there a downloadable demo available to run on our PCs to gauge the performance impact?

Just going to say, that ambient occlusion comparison doesn't look at all fair. First of all, they didn't even compare it to HBAO, which is their own software.
Second of all, it just looks like they turned it off for the comparison.

Fuk you ngreedia and your god damn fcking crap gpu's. And yes that includes the "majestic" "gtx1080" which is only a tiny bit faster than Vega due to games favoring ngreedia. IF we the consumers don't start killing off nvidia than sure as hell AMD can't. AMD always had better gpu's, yes better performance and price wise, but that didn't help them much. Sorry this might not be the right post on which to complain about, but if we don't start complaining on anything nvidia than we are doomed and I want a CHOICE when I buy a gpu.

Keep the hate train coming! I know I am saying the truth you nvidia fanboys. You can choose to deny it but not for long. We have come to a full blown nvidia monopoly and if we the consumers dont change that than we will suffer because the prices on gpu's will rise.

No I don't I am speaking my mind and I am right. Simple facts, but nvidia, fanboys or any fanboys at that be it amd or intel are blind, narrow minded cck's who only thing "muhh my brand best fck anyone else". This is not fair play from nvidia no matter how you paint it, hell they are even crippling they'r own gpu's and hiding they'r drivers behind a login, and I as a consumer won't stand for that nor should anyone. But people are to stupid to look in to the future or look at all, people only look 1 step ahead.

Sorry Tmario98, but you can't speak your mind if you dont agree with the fanboys on this, well.. any site. People love Nvidia and any other company for that matter, and they can do what the hell they want to. People will still buy it.

I'm sorry and who is exactly preventing me to speak my mind? The fanboys can go shove they'r di*k up they'r arsholes. People are blind and that is what i am trying to change here. But I see nvidiots are to far gone. They are by far the worst fanboys of the tech community. The sad part is they are also the most common fanboys, but that wont stop me of putting some common sense in they'r mind any way I can. I WILL ALWAYS speak my mind and NO ONE can take that from me NO ONE. What is the point if people keep they'r mouth shut out of fear, SPEAK god damn it SPEAK, words are the most powerful tool of all.
