We’re still just over a week away from God of War’s launch on PlayStation 4, but the embargo is up today and the reviews have been flooding in. As if there was any doubt when the embargo was so far ahead of its launch, the critical response to God of War has been fantastic, making it the highest reviewed PlayStation 4 exclusive of all time.

As of right now, God of War is sitting on an average score of 95/100 from 54 reviews on OpenCritic, placing it in the top 0.1% of all games reviewed.

It’s a similar story on Metacritic, which because of its weighting system comes in with a marginally lower 94/100. That’s still higher than Bloodborne, Uncharted 4, Persona 5, The Witcher 3, and Monster Hunter World.

Critics are praising its supposedly incredible story, deep mechanics that are drip-fed to the player through a playthrough, the physicality of the combat, and the sheer size of the damn thing. A straight run through the story takes around 25 hours, while those looking to explore all of God of War’s side-content and quests can push a playtime past 50 hours. God of War features a compelling upgrade system, heaps of loot to find, and a beautiful Norse world.

As for the negatives, I've plumbed some of the lower reviews (the lowest is 80%) to see complaints regarding God of War being a greatest hits of AAA game standards, rather than forging its own path, as well as a few reviewers noting that some of the skills you unlock for Kratos are useless.

Sadly, if you’re hoping to see God of War on any other platform, the chances of that are just about zero. This is a Sony developed game through and through. It does place a curious weight on Microsoft though, who have continued to disappoint with their console exclusives compared to both Sony and Nintendo, and their work is cut out if they want the Xbox One to be seen as the place to game.

Boy... I want to play GOW4 and yet I still have to finish GOW1 and 2 and then GOW 3 somehow. I've got GOW 1 and 2 on my PS Vita, finished GOW Ghost of Sparta and Chains of Olympus on PSP ages ago. Just need to steal my friend's PS4 for GOW3 and GOW4...

Are the PSP ones worth playing? I've only played the original trilogy...

I definitely enjoyed them - they were my first entries into the saga. If you can get them running at 4K on your PC - they blow the original 1 and 2 out of the water in looks too :)
Ghost of Sparta is set after the first GOW game and Chains of Olympus is set between Ascension and God of War 1. So they're not spin-offs and should tie into what you've played.

never understood. There are top rated games which have great storyline but why still people want to play those repititive multiplayer games.

Same. I personally haven't played a single Call of Duty game in over a decade and I refuse to touch MOBA, and Battle Royale titles.

I know, I prefer a good story against rinse and repeat games, main preference is sp / co op games

It all comes down to the person. I loved to play single player games (still do, don't misunderstand) but sometimes I arrive at home too tired and I just want to play a no brainer.

Contrary to what a lot of people think about cinematic games, I tend to enjoy them the most. When developers put a lot of attention to a well-crafted narrative in an interactive form, it usually grasps my attention and I yearn for more. There are games that have very good gameplay but everything else is lacking. I find myself distracted and less committed. Then it is a question about repetition.

For the most part I agree, unless the narrative itself gets remotely boring and then I end up drifting to my phone while a cutscene's playing. But, God of War doesn't have any cutscenes at all so this shouldn't be a problem here.

You'd be better off getting a pro. Some if not all the exclusives run at 60fps on that one. Jon told me that Horizon Zero Dawn runs at 1080p 60fps on the pro.

Yeah quite a bit pricier but God of War, for example, is confirmed to run at 1080p/60fps on the Pro, 30fps otherwise.

Horizon at 1080p runs at 30 on the pro, not like those 60 would've saved that disaster of a game anyway.

I just upgraded to a pro when my original ps4 died, but the jump was huge. I didn't think I would enjoy the pro as much as I am, the 1TB SSD and overclocked jaguar have a serious performance boost over the original, and the new ps4 pro developed games are definitely a step up over the original titles, and finding joy in the in increased performance and fidelity on alot of the older games as well.

I am a little bit tired of cinematic action games from Sony, but I guess I have to give it a try now...

A friend of mine expected the game to do not so well because he believed it to be alienating GoW fans. Looks like he was wrong.

Ya know it's funny that Gears of War and God of War share the same abbreviation so it can cause confusion but I am of course talking about God of War here.

Hell, I even confuse myself with that abbreviation sometimes. XD

Don't worry, there's an easy lifehack to distinguish them - one is bad, one is good
