Blowing things up into countless tiny pieces is the heart and soul of just about any great game, and MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is no different. If you can see it, odds are you can send a laser-guided missile its way and send it into orbit. Leveling base perimeters, downing giant dropships, or simply jumping on tanks, Mechwarrior 5 doesn’t look as if it’s light on ways to cause immense devastation. Just the sort of thing we’d hope for from a 60-foot tall walking metal mountain with a dozen weapons stuck to it.
MechWarriors 5: Mercenaries is going to be the first single-player MechWarrior game in almost 16 years, ever since the very well received MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries all the way back in 2002.
It’s under development at Piranha Games, a studio that’s had a fairly low profile over the years, working on MechWarrior Online, the multiplayer element and console ports of Duke Nukem Forever, and various smaller titles like PSP versions of Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 and Need For Speed: Undercover.
In terms of projects at this scale, they’re still relatively untested, so we’re certainly interested to see how they step up to the task. On the evidence of this new gameplay footage, which has come on in leaps and bounds from the initial reveal, Piranha’s off to a strong start.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is coming to PC later in 2018.
