Modders continue to wondrous things with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, many times beyond what Bethesda themselves achieved with the enhanced edition. Provided you’ve got a powerful enough PC, and you’re willing to put in the time, TES: Skyrim can be the best-looking game on the planet, some seven years after its release.
The latest such mod is an 8K and 4K texture mod for Skyrim’s rocks and assorted geometry. Modder ‘jd941’ has used photogrammetry techniques to achieve this, the same sort of techniques used to great effect in Star Wars Battlefront 2 and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.
It’s already been available for the original Skyrim, but this new and improved version has arrived tailored towards the Skyrim Special Edition. It’s the work of LupusHegemonia, who’s taken the original mod and tweaked it to his own end.
"This is the author's original 4K-4K (and some 8K-8K too! ) textures files - defuse/normal maps/pumping maps etc,” he says. "This is my personal version of the textures. I made them quite much de-saturated and most of them in grey-tones. Also, I added more grunge surface to most of the rocks' textures/normal maps. My version in 4K-2K resolution."
You can see it for yourself in action below, and the results are rather tasty for any discerning mineraphiles lurking out there.
As ever, this mod is available to download for yourself from over on NexusMods.
