Intel has revealed a new member of its family, the Intel Optane SSD905P. The new SSD becomes the fastest becomes the fastest solid state drive ever created, aimed at providing hyper-fast performance for workstations and other specialist uses.

The Intel Optane SSD 905P is going to be available in both PCIe slot and U.2 variants, with maximum capacities of 960GB for the PCIe model and 460GB for the U.2 version. Both drives use a custom Intel NVMe controller.

Intel is claiming random read speeds of 575,000 IOPS and random write of 555,000 IOPS, which is pretty much off the charts in terms of performance. They’ve also got 2,600MB/s sequential read and 2,200MB/s sequential write speeds, which are altogether more normal compared to other professional SSD but still mighty fast.

Over at Tom’s Hardware, they put the Optane SSD 905P PCIe 960GB through its paces and discovered it was the fastest SSD they’d ever tested. It achieved total storage bandwidth of 1669MB/s in PCMark 8, 11 percent faster than the previous-gen Optane 900P 480GB that clocked in at 1498MB/s. It left Samsung’s nearest competitor for dust, with the Samsung 970 EVO 1TB achieving just 539MB/s.  

Pricing for these bad boys doesn’t come cheap. They’re aimed at intense workloads and professional use so it’s par for the course, but you’re looking $1299 for the Intel Optane SSD 905P 960GB PCIe and $599 for the U.2 drive. That comes with a five-year warranty and they’re guaranteed 10 full drive writes per day.
