Popular PC Gaming YouTube John 'TotalBiscuit' Bain has Died at the Age of 33

Written by Jon Sutton on Fri, May 25, 2018 10:06 AM

Gaming commentator and YouTube critic John Bain, known as TotalBiscuit, or The Cynical Brit, has passed away at the age of 33.

Bain had been battling cancer for four years. After treatment, it went into remission but sadly returned earlier this year. In a statement at the time, Bain said "conventional chemotherapy's effectiveness had been exhausted," confirming he would be retiring from YouTube.

TotalBiscuit’s wife, Genna Bain, confirmed his passing on Twitter yesterday evening, offering a poem in tribute to her late husband.

Over his career, TotalBiscuit amassed more than 2.2 million subscribers on YouTube, building a reputation as the biggest PC game critic in the world. He began his career as a host on World of Warcraft Radio, eventually turning to YouTube in 2010, where he began posting gameplay and commentary videos of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Over the years, Bain became renowned for his critique of video games, from huge AAA titles to indie gems, peaking with his ‘WTF is…?’ series.

"John Bain's opinionated game critiques and sense of humour led to him becoming one of the most prominent voices in the gaming industry," wrote game-streaming service Twitch in a statement.

"When I leave this world I want to leave something my family can use to help them earn," wrote John Bain in his retirement post. "It's been a privilege, thank you all for letting me into your life and do something so important as to have an impact on how you spend your hard-earned money."

One of the very few non-biased Game journalists - from the ****tiest games, he found at least 1 reason to try it and from the best he could always find what was missing from it...

I remember when I read that he was struggling with cancer. That was a couple of years ago and since I haven't heard anything about it in the meantime I figured he managed to beat it..... This is so sad man

I never saw a single video from this guy but i know how sad it is when a young person passes away. A life is harsh for some people and, sadly, more and more youngsters leave us 2 soon. Rest in peace.

I never really believed I could be this crushed by the loss of someone I've never met, but here we are. His videos have been a part of my life since the WoW Cataclysm beta days. He's the main reason I'm a PC gamer today. He introduced me to a good third of the games in my Steam library, most of which I'd never even have heard of if not for him.

I used to read his critics sometimes on steam for any game I was interested back then. but not anymore as I started to judge a game in my own way and methods. he was honest and unbiased which is why I liked to read his critics. life is cruel and beautiful. it can be born and also end sometimes unforseen and untimely. with this saying in my life I am able to keep my tears from not flowing when a death happens close or distant. my humble condolences to his family and I hope they will get through his death overtime.
May ur soul rest in peace sir and u will be missed by many tremendously.

What is the wrong with people on Twitter, they just keep uploading his old tweets from 2011 when he was toxic to some people, but for god sake the guy is dead and he was sorry for his actions, he's not going to read those ing tweets, only his sad family that got nothing to do with his past actions will see them, which will make their situation worse in a time where they don't deserve anymore that makes it harder on them, those people who are uploading his old tweets right now needs some special ****ing mental help.
