Gaming commentator and YouTube critic John Bain, known as TotalBiscuit, or The Cynical Brit, has passed away at the age of 33.
Bain had been battling cancer for four years. After treatment, it went into remission but sadly returned earlier this year. In a statement at the time, Bain said "conventional chemotherapy's effectiveness had been exhausted," confirming he would be retiring from YouTube.
TotalBiscuit’s wife, Genna Bain, confirmed his passing on Twitter yesterday evening, offering a poem in tribute to her late husband.
Over his career, TotalBiscuit amassed more than 2.2 million subscribers on YouTube, building a reputation as the biggest PC game critic in the world. He began his career as a host on World of Warcraft Radio, eventually turning to YouTube in 2010, where he began posting gameplay and commentary videos of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Over the years, Bain became renowned for his critique of video games, from huge AAA titles to indie gems, peaking with his ‘WTF is…?’ series.
"John Bain's opinionated game critiques and sense of humour led to him becoming one of the most prominent voices in the gaming industry," wrote game-streaming service Twitch in a statement.
"When I leave this world I want to leave something my family can use to help them earn," wrote John Bain in his retirement post. "It's been a privilege, thank you all for letting me into your life and do something so important as to have an impact on how you spend your hard-earned money."
