DICE has confirmed that Battlefield V will launch in October with just two playable factions. As we saw in the reveal trailer, Battlefield V will feature the British forces for the Allies and the German forces for the Axis. But that’s your lot, at least for launch.
Replying to a fan, the Battlefield Twitter account said “At launch, you’ll be able to choose from the British faction on the Allied side, and the German faction on the Axis side. Through Tides of War, we will evolve the Axis and Allied Factions.”
Tides of War is the term DICE is using to dress up its live service, or GaaS, features. After the launch of BFV, there will be seasons, each known as Tides of War, and each including special events, challenges, new factions, weapons, and of course maps. All of this is going to be totally free.
The benefit to all of this, as we already knew, is that there’s going to be no fragmentation of players. There’s no Premium Pass, so everyone can play all of the maps and modes together without spending any money.
The downside, as we suspected, is that this means content is going to be doled out piecemeal. At a typical Battlefield launch, you can usually expect several factions, with more added, but we’re going to have to make do with just the two for Battlefield V’s launch. Fortunately, we won’t have like to wait for the first Tides of War event. Fall of Europe will kick off in November and will incorporate France, Rotterdam (Holland), and Norway. DICE also mentioned North Africa, but for obvious reasons, this probably isn’t included.
As for the factions themselves, cosmetics and equipment can only be equipped by appropriate factions. Allies can only wear Allied helmets, for example, and “there will also be additional historical restrictions in Tides of War”.
The live approach for Star Wars Battlefront 2 doesn’t look as if it’s panned out quite how DICE had hoped. It’ll be interesting to see just what lessons have been learned and how consistent the content rollout can be.
Battlefield V is out on October 19th for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Expect to the see the first gameplay at E3 2018 in just over a week’s time.
